It is winter time in South America, and resorts are starting to announce their opening dates for the ski season. Resorts across the Andes Mountains are putting the finishing touches on their preparations for the 2026 ski season. Each day, the season creeps closer for skiers ready to get in their South American powder turns.

Here are the projected opening dates for South America’s ski resorts.

Chilean Resorts

Chilean ski resorts are often the first to open in South America, thanks to higher base elevations and proximity to weather moving in from the Pacific Ocean. Valle Nevado, one of South America’s largest ski resorts, is frequently among the earliest to open. With its high base elevation of 2,987 meters (9,800 feet), Valle Nevado’s altitude ensures temperatures are cold enough to produce and hold natural and artificial snow earlier in the year. The resort had initially planned for a June 14 opening date, but was forced to push back. Now the projected opening date is June 20. Other Chilean resorts are not far behind. Several are expected to open their slopes before the end of June.

Argentinian Resorts

The Argentinian season is projected to begin with Cerro Castor opening on June 26. Several of the country’s other major ski areas are expected to follow shortly afterwards. Cerro Catedral Alta Patagonia, Chapelco, and Las Leñas are all preparing for late June or early July openings. The opening dates are subject to snow conditions, as swells and droughts can lead to changes in projected opening dates.

Argentina is home to some of South America’s most renowned ski resorts, including Cerro Catedral Alta Patagonia, which attracts visitors from around the world to experience its breathtaking views and challenging terrain. As snowfall makes its way towards the Argentinian Andes, resorts are making final preparations to welcome skiers back to the slopes.
