Afriski, located in the landlocked African nation of Lesotho, has officially opened for the 2026 winter season. Afriski is one of only two ski resorts located in sub-Saharan Africa, along with Tiffindell Ski Resort in South Africa. Sadly, Tiffindell has been closed for several seasons now, making Afriski the only operating resort.

While many would not associate Africa with ski resorts, the southern portion of the continent lies far enough south of the Tropic of Capricorn that it receives significant seasonal changes. Combined with an elevation of around 10,000 feet (3050 meters), Afriski is in a prime position to receive abundant powder throughout the winter.

Afriski is located in the Maluti Mountains, about 4 hours from South Africa’s administrative capital of Pretoria and the largest urban area, Johannesburg. It serves as a popular ski destination for both of the nearby South African metro areas, along with international travelers. All of Lesotho is located above 3,000 feet (1,000 meters), making it one of the highest-elevation countries in the world. The ski area announced in a Facebook post:

“The slopes are officially OPEN! 🏂

🏂⛷️⛷️It’s time to hit the snow and make the most of winter at Afriski. From skiing and snowboarding to tubing and more, there’s something for everyone.”

Afriski has a vertical drop of 1,001 feet and spans an area of 10 acres. It features two main ski trails, aimed at intermediate skiers, and a beginner trail, which are served by four lifts. The season generally runs from mid-June to the end of August, offering skiers and snowboarders a short but often very intense season. Lift tickets start at around M1,250 ($77), a great deal in today’s current ski resort pricing climate.

With the season just getting started at Afriski, and those of us in the Northern hemisphere entering the heart of summer, there is perhaps no better time to head down to the bottom of Africa to get some turns in. While Africa may be famous for its wildlife safaris, rich cultures, and landscapes, perhaps winter sports should be added to that list.
