Every year, the Australian winter season starts over the King’s Birthday weekend in Victoria and New South Wales ski resorts. Some years there is loads of snow, others there is no snow, but there are always parties. This year, there was some snow, definitely some partying, and plenty of sunshine.
This past weekend at Mt. Hotham, there was enough snow to go for a slide. After a week of stormy weather, which brought a combination of rain and wet snow, there was snow to get some of Mt Hotham’s beginner terrain going. For Saturday, June 6, the flat where first-timer lessons are given was ready, and the nearby magic carpet, The Summit Trainer.
While many more experienced thrill seekers hiked higher up the Summit above the magic carpet to get a few more turns in.
On Sunday, at lunch time, the resort opened The Summit Chairlift for the rest of the weekend. This really brought a buzz to the resort. The day was sunny and beautiful, a good place for skiers and boarders to get their feet under them. Coverage was a little thin in places, but the snow was good.
Monday, June 8, conditions improved as the snow machines had been firing overnight, which made a nice top-up to the early-season conditions. The sun continued to shine all day.
To celebrate the early snow and encourage new skiers and snowboarders, Mt Hotham offered $99 lift tickets with $1 lessons for first-time adults and $54 lift tickets with $1 lessons for children.
The weather for the whole weekend was beautiful and sunny, a touch too warm. The resort was buzzing with those moving in for the season or people visiting the snow for the first time.
Come Tuesday, June 9, a system of strong winds, fog, and heavy rain came in and impacted the snowpack. It is early in the season for Mt. Hotham, Australia, but fret not: the real snow will come soon.
