State of Decay 3 is due to release next year, across Xbox Series X/S, PlayStation 5 and PC. It will also be coming to Game Pass.

State of Decay 3 is a co-op survival experience, and sees players building communities, shape settlements, and survive together in an open world. You can check out the new trailer for State of Decay 3, which was shared during this evening’s Xbox Games Showcase, below.

State of Decay 3 was initially announced back in July 2020, so just shy of six years ago. Things then went dark for a little while, and there were reports alleging sexism and mismanagement at developer Undead Labs in 2022.

The game subsequently reappeared with a new trailer in 2024. To accompany the trailer, studio head Philip Holt teased some of the ideas driving State of Decay 3’s development. “The first thing that I hope people pick up [from the trailer] is that there’s four player characters we’re highlighting,” he explained at the time, “three of them start in different places in the world – so we’re implying this idea of a shared world experience, not just a ride-along, and that the boundaries in which you can go off independently are going to be much, much greater than they were in State of Decay 2.”

Back in April, Holt confirmed the 2020 reveal trailer was based entirely on “a concept” for the game, and a major inclusion in said trailer won’t actually make it into the game: zombie animals.

Elsewhere this evening, we got a look at Gears of War: E-Day, which unlike State of Decay 3 is skipping PlayStation 5.
