Metro 2039 goes to war with the underground’s Führer in a moody first gameplay trailer, as February 2027 release window confirmed
What lies beneath.

Following Metro 2039’s striking cinematic unveiling back in April, developer 4A Games has revealed first proper gameplay of its gritty post-apocalyptic horror shooter, narrowing down its previously announced “winter” release date to February next year.
As we learned previously, Metro 2039 tells the story of the reclusive Stranger, a fully voiced protagonist (in a first for the series) plagued by nightmarish visions. When the Stranger reluctantly returns to the grim subterranean world of the Moscow Metro system, where the survivors of a nuclear apocalypse attempt to carve out an existence beneath the city’s radioactive surface, it soon becomes clear much has changed since the events of 2019’s Metro Exodus.
Flooded by propaganda and misinformation, the Metro various factions have been united under a new banner, the Novoreich – a brutal totalitarian regime led by a new Führer, known as Hunter. We get a first proper look at Metro 2039’s fanatical Spartan leader in 4A’s latest trailer (as featured in today’s Xbox Games Showcase) but there’s plenty more besides.
Across its three-or-so-minute runtime, which begins with a montage of striking post-apocalyptic vistas before all hell breaks loose and we get to the frenetic first-person action – there’s a taste of the series’ familiar mix of claustrophobic stealth and gunplay, unfolding both above and below ground. Eagle-eyed viewers might also spot a new stealth weapon, The Shatun, and a new breaching charge.
Previously, 4A – which is based in Ukraine, and has been developing Metro 2039 amid Russia’s ongoing invasion of the country – said it was aiming for a “much darker tone this time around”, noting it would be telling its story from a “unique Ukrainian perspective”. It added that while the series has always been about preventing war, its message in Metro 2039 has shifted to be about the consequences of war; the “cost of silence, the horrors of tyranny, and the price of freedom”.
As we now know, Metro 2039 is currently expected to launch in February 2027, when it will be available for Xbox Series S/X, PlayStation 5, and PC via Steam and the Epic Games Store.
