A National Park Service mountaineering ranger died Thursday, June 4, 2026, after falling into a crevasse while on patrol high on Denali, Alaska, the tallest mountain in North America.

According to the National Park Service (NPS), seasonal mountaineering ranger Robin Pendery, of Enumclaw, Washington, fell into a crevasse near the mountain’s 14,000-foot camp at approximately 2 p.m. on Thursday. Despite an immediate response from fellow park personnel, Pendery did not survive.

The incident occurred during a climbing patrol on Denali, where mountaineering rangers work throughout the climbing season to support climber safety, conduct emergency rescues, and assist with mountain operations in one of the world’s most demanding alpine environments. Pendery joined Denali’s mountaineering staff in 2024 and quickly became a valued member of the ranger team.

“We are heartbroken by the loss of a member of our Denali family,” Denali National Park and Preserve Superintendent Brooke Merrell said in a statement. “Our mountaineering rangers dedicate themselves to serving visitors and helping others in one of the most challenging environments in the world. Today, we mourn the loss of a valued colleague, friend, and teammate. Our thoughts are with Robin’s family and loved ones.”

NPS said the incident remains under investigation and that additional details are not currently available.

The news sent shockwaves through Alaska’s tight-knit mountaineering community. Denali Rescue Volunteers, a nonprofit organization that supports rescue operations on the mountain, shared a message from Ranger Chrissie Oken following the tragedy. “We are devastated to report the loss of one of our climbing rangers, Robin Pendery,” Oken wrote. “We are so grateful for the outpouring of love and support from our community and will post a longer tribute to our beloved friend and coworker soon.” The organization added that its board and community were sending their love to Pendery’s family, friends, and fellow rangers.

Denali, which rises to 20,310 feet (6,190 meters) above sea level, attracts hundreds of climbers each year. The mountain’s heavily glaciated terrain, severe weather, and extensive crevasse fields make it one of the most challenging mountaineering objectives in North America. Rangers stationed on the mountain play a critical role in supporting climbers and responding to emergencies throughout the season.

NPS said its immediate focus is supporting Pendery’s family, friends, and colleagues during this difficult time.

Additional information will be released when it becomes available.
