Today, California transportation officials have announced temporary highway closures across several major Sierra Nevada mountain passes due to incoming weather conditions.
According to the California Department of Transportation (Caltrans), closures will affect State Route 4 over Ebbetts Pass, State Route 89 over Monitor Pass, and State Route 108 over Sonora Pass beginning Tuesday, May 26, 2026, at 12:00 p.m. No estimated time of reopening has been provided.
The closures are weather-related and may remain in place until conditions improve, with officials stating there is currently no estimated time of reopening (ETO).
Motorists are being urged to plan ahead and avoid travel through high-elevation routes during the closure period, as conditions in the Sierra can change rapidly during late-season storms.
Caltrans is advising drivers to use its QuickMap tool to monitor real-time highway conditions and closures before traveling. The agency continues to encourage the public to “Know Before You Go” when planning trips through mountain regions.
The affected routes — SR-4 (Ebbetts Pass), SR-89 (Monitor Pass), and SR-108 (Sonora Pass) — are among the most heavily used trans-Sierra corridors during the spring and summer months, particularly for access between the Central Valley and the Eastern Sierra.
