Antipodean outdoor enthusiasts rejoice: Canadian outdoor brand Arc’teryx has officially opened the Southern Hemisphere’s first Alpha Store inside Sydney’s historic Queen Victoria Building (QVB), marking a major expansion for the premium alpine apparel company in Australia. The QVB is a historic 19th-century shopping arcade in downtown Sydney, widely considered one of Australia’s most iconic retail and architectural landmarks. Spanning three levels in the heart of Sydney’s CBD, the new flagship store has been designed as more than a traditional retail outlet, combining technical apparel, sustainability initiatives, climbing culture and community spaces within one of Australia’s most iconic heritage buildings. According to the company, the store represents “a new pinnacle retail experience” for the brand in the region.

The new Alpha Store features the most extensive Arc’teryx product range currently available in Australia, including the country’s largest dedicated Veilance retail space, the company’s premium urban performance line. Among the flagship features is an on-site ReBIRD Service Centre offering garment care, repairs and washing services aimed at extending product lifespan and reducing waste.

The store also includes a dedicated harness testing zone and a climbing-wall-inspired installation modeled after the cliffs of the Blue Mountains. Arc’teryx said the concept was designed to merge “technical performance, craftsmanship and mountain culture” within the QVB setting.

A major feature of the new Sydney location is a First Nations art installation developed in collaboration with artist Miranda Hampson alongside Gadigal Elder Uncle Ray Davison and Bidjigal and Gweagal Elder Aunty Barb Simms. According to Arc’teryx, the installation reflects “thousands of years of Gadigal knowledge, sustainability, and connection to Country.”

The inclusion reflects a broader trend among international outdoor brands attempting to integrate Indigenous collaboration and environmental themes into flagship retail experiences.

To celebrate the opening, Arc’teryx hosted a series of launch events and community promotions centered around some of the company’s most sought-after products. The brand distributed more than AUD 50,000 (USD 35,000) worth of gear across opening weekend through in-store giveaways and promotions.

Featured items included the Alpha SV Jacket, the Beta Jacket, Veilance apparel, footwear, packs, accessories, and several limited Arc’teryx products not publicly available for sale. The Alpha SV, originally developed for extreme alpine climbing, has become one of the company’s most recognizable technical shells and a major status symbol within outdoor and streetwear culture alike.

Arc’teryx also hosted a “Toque Exchange” event in which customers traded pre-loved beanies for the brand’s popular Bird Head Toque. The collected beanies were set to be redistributed through a local community initiative. The company said the event was intended to highlight product longevity and responsible consumption, themes that have become increasingly central to outdoor industry marketing and sustainability strategies.

Founded in North Vancouver in 1989, Arc’teryx has evolved from a niche climbing equipment manufacturer into one of the most influential premium outdoor brands in the world, particularly among younger consumers drawn to technical apparel and “gorpcore” fashion trends. The QVB flagship now gives the company a major retail foothold in Australia at a time when demand for premium outdoor apparel continues to grow well beyond traditional alpine sports communities.
