Report from May 21, 2026
To be clear, Mammoth Mountain is skiing amazingly right now, and May is my favorite month to ski here.
We’re skiing top to bottom, and there are so many options:
Terrain:
- Bumps off Chair 23
- Wiggles all over on Chairs 3 and 23
- Upper-mountain race course groomers (perfect)
- Lower-mountain race course groomers (fun)
Park:
- Pond skim
- One medium-sized jump
- A buncha rails
- One wall ride

Liam and I got out there around 10 a.m. and the mountain wasn’t totally soft just yet. It’s been cool lately. Today was a touch warmer, which helped things soften earlier. The cooler temps are a blessing, though — they’re keeping things from getting sticky down low.

Chair 2 is closed for the season, so we started off on the gondola. The Cornice groomer was already soft. Chair 3’s face was soft and fun. Then I went around the back of 3 to the terrain park, thinking I’d hit the jump, but my courage failed me. Honestly, I’ve been extremely tired the past 2 days since going for the D Spin 720° at Palisades Tahoe.

We then did a couple of top-to-bottoms on Chair 3. Today was special – there was very little race training, so we had the race courses, both upper and lower mountain, right from the get-go.

The pond skim is a little wonky: the pond drained itself recently, and it’s full of ice chunks from the cold snap. I didn’t get into the wiggles — they didn’t quite look soft today.
Mammoth will be open until at least May 31, maybe longer.
Thanks, California!
