Hunt Wheels has unveiled a new lightweight road option with its 4AM Limitless Ti_UD Carbon Spoke and 4AM Limitless Steel Spoke wheel systems. The wheels are billed as the brand’s best option for high-alpine racing, with a lightweight design that does not sacrifice aerodynamics. Hunt claims that the 4AM Limitless Ti_UD Carbon Spoke wheelset is 1.4 watts faster than the Enve 4.5 Pro while being 139 grams lighter.

While the aerodynamics are a nice add, the wheelset’s weight is the real highlight, as the wheelset weighs in at 1,156 grams for a set that includes Ceramic Speed bearings and carbon spokes.

The carbon spokes, in particular, are a key selling point for the wheels, with the broad VONOA Ti_UD spokes offering reduced drag through a broad airfoil shape in a lightweight, 1.7 gram construction. The wheel also leverages a reduced spoke count of 15 in the front and 18 in the rear to reduce weight and improve aerodynamics, exposing only five spokes to clean air at any time.

All of this adds up to a low-weight, highly aerodynamic premium wheelset that adds a dimension to Hunt’s premium products.

The Hunt 4AM Limitless wheel set follows the brand’s 5AM Limitless wheelset, which they unveiled at Sea Otter earlier this spring. The 5AM wheelset was built as a fully fledged aero wheelset with 50+ mm deep rims, aerodynamic spokes, rim widths optimized for 30mm tires, and variable rim depths with the front stretching deeper than the rear.

With the 5AM Limitless, Hunt uses 58mm rims in the front and 55mm rims in the rear with the same 15/18 spoke count for aerodynamic gains. A complete set with CeramicSpeed bearings weighs in at 1,212 grams. The 4AM Limitless cuts about 56 grams of weight with a profile that has around a 10mm shallower aerodynamic profile. Compared to other brands, that closeness between a climbing wheel and a more aerodynamic wheel is a bit of an outlier.

Nevertheless, Hunt stands by it, with the shared technology that was launched in the 5 AM Limitless wheelset also boosting the 4AM’s ability to still fit the needs of mountain climbing, while simultaneously providing aerodynamic benefits that still add up, even in a route with plenty of verticality.

The technology that underpins this mix of depth and low weight is the Limitless technology that gives the two wheelsets their full name. The technique uses a low-density structural polymer between the carbon layers of the sidewall, increasing the strength of the rims while preserving stiffness compared to traditional carbon layup processes, since the carbon has twice the density of the polymer. That lightweight rim is also shaped into a wider, blunt airfoil shape that prompts more “attachment” of the airflow over the tire/rim profile in higher wind angles. That quality boosts the stability of the rim despite its depth and weight.

Overall, this creates a more stable feeling wheel that allows more depth in the front wheel where there is cleaner air and the aero gains are larger, similar to how Roval has used in its new Rapide Sprint CLX and Terra Aero CLX rims.

The big ticket item for the 4AM Limitless collection is the lightest Ti_UD Carbon Spoke with CeramicSpeed bearings. That is far from the only wheelset Hunt is releasing, however. The 4AM Limitless Ti_UD Carbon Spoke also comes with steel bearings, reducing the cost for the most aerodynamic spoke construction.

Additionally, there is also the slightly modified 4AM Limitless Steel Spoke wheel set that uses a 20/24 spoke construction and weighs 1285grams for the set. Lastly, to round out the Limitless wheelset line as a whole, Hunt has a new steel spoke version of it deeper 5AM Limitless wheelset, using the same 20/24 spoke redesign and weighing in at 1,339 grams.
