Introducing One Good, a new Highsnobiety series shedding light on the tried, tested and trusted products our editors can’t stop fawning over. For more recs on fashion, beauty and tech, visit the Shopping tab or subscribe to our newsletter.

For the past handful of weeks, I’ve always excused the mention of jackets in the Shopper newsletter as final one-offs; promised to not speak of them again until we’ve made it closer to fall.

Weather is a mindset, and with spring long sprung and summer on the horizon, I’ve wanted to save outerwear talk for only rare and important occasions, reserve it for mentions of speciality items and releases. Come to find, having come across what I believe might just be the perfect jacket for the season, lends itself as one such occasion.

AuraleeWool-Twill Blouson Jacket
$1,130

Buy at Mr Porter

By Japanese brand Auralee, this black twill wool jacket I obtained around and about a year ago, and really put to challenge this most erratic of yearly periods. It’s super lightweight, woven of fibers so fine one could mistake the whole thing for some type of water-repellent nylon or other utility synthetic. There are big handy double-pockets to slip in from up top or the sides, and a draw string fastening to completely alter the garment’s silhouette, from baggy blouson to form-fitted windbreaker.

Not only does the natural material perform as both warm and breathable, the subtly tailored under-arm cut-outs are a source of added ventilation the likes of which are A, hard to come by, and B, a key distinguishing factor in what allots this design its prime contender status for spring/summer outerwear that defies temperature in either direction — for overly air-conditioned offices, sudden rainfall, crisp mornings, evening breezes, or travels to colder places. And best of all, it protects from the aforementioned without causing you to break a sweat.

Hefty in price? Yes, but as a frugal thrifter at heart, I will swear by the quality of this truly timeless (and thus far durable) piece. Atop, say, a Piggly Wiggly tee for a quick errand-run or a shirt and even blazer as the outermost layer to fend off an island wedding’s nighttime chills, it’s neither too casual nor too formal-looking.
