Team USA Olympic skier Hunter Hess was called a ‘real Loser’ by U.S. President Donald Trump. Now, he’s channeling the insult into the Hunter Hess Real Loser Project — a fundraising initiative donating 100% of proceeds to youth sports.
A press conference leading up to the 2026 Milano-Cortina Winter Olympics saw several U.S. athletes speaking candidly about their mixed emotions representing the country. When asked about his feelings, halfpipe skier Hess said: “Just because I’m wearing the flag doesn’t mean I represent everything that’s going on in the U.S.”
In response, President Trump took to his social media platform. He called the skier a “real Loser” in a shocking moment that made waves across the internet.

Now, Hess is using the moment for good. The 27-year-old has launched The Real Loser Project, releasing t-shirts and hats labeled “Real Loser.” 100% of the proceeds are being donated to Stoked, a nonprofit that helps underprivileged youth participate in action sports like surfing, skateboarding, and snowboarding.
From Mount Bachelor to the Real Loser Project: A Bend Native Gives Back
The Bend, Oregon, native grew up skiing on Mount Bachelor. He was involved with the Mt. Bachelor Sports Education Fund (MBSEF), a nonprofit that uses competitive snow sports to create opportunities for athletes. Inspired by his roots, Hess is now giving back to the sports he enjoys most.

Death Threats, Snoop Dogg, and Unwavering Support
Following President Trump’s comments, the first-time Olympian received thousands of hate comments and death threats. This all occurred before he was to compete on skiing’s biggest stage.
Despite the hate, Hess did not back down. “I stand with what I said,” Hess stated in an interview with the Associated Press.
The snow sports community was behind Hess throughout the ordeal. Friends and family took to social media to show support. Fellow Team USA halfpipe skier Alex Ferreira said he stood by his teammate. The Olympian even heard from celebrities, including rapper Snoop Dogg, who gave Hess a FaceTime call.
After finishing in 10th overall in the men’s halfpipe final, the halfpipe skier knew he wanted to “make something positive.” A little over three months later, Hess kicked off his project.
So far, The Loser Project has helped raise over $4,250 for Stoked. It is nearly halfway to its $10,000 goal just two days after the project’s announcement.
“Let’s all be real losers together for a better tomorrow,” Hess said.
