Eufonso Eulálio (Bahrain-Victorious) and Netcompany Ineos duo Filippo Ganna and Thymen Arensman came out huge winners of Tuesday’s stage 10 time trial of the Giro d’Italia.

Eulálio kept a loose grasp on his GC lead after Jonas Vingegaard (Visma-Lease a Bike) didn’t dominate his rivals as far as expected and fell short of snatching the pink jersey.

Arensman finished second behind time trial stallion and stage-winner Ganna and vaulted above a clutch of pure climbers in the overall ranking.

Vingegaard finished 13th on the stage and padded his advantage over many of his rivals from the first half of the race.

However, a possibly sub-par performance by the Dane allowed several new contenders to claw back time on the rider who’s seen as focal point in the race for the maglia rosa.

The stage leaves Eulálio just 27 seconds ahead of Vingegaard on GC after he started the day with a 2:24 advantage.

Arensman made huge gains to take third spot on the classification, 1:57 behind Eulálio.

Vingegaard no fan of long time trials: ‘It was terrible’

Vingegaard admitted he didn’t enjoy Tuesday’s sprawling 42km test but didn’t rate it a bad day for a 59kg whippet.

“It was terrible,” Vingegaard said of the experience. “It’s not my specialty to do a long flat time trial like this, I’ve never been good at it.

“To be honest, I feel like I came through it pretty well. A completely flat TT like this benefits the bigger guys more.”

There’s no doubt Vingegaard is still in pole position to wear the pink jersey after stage 21 in Rome.

But it seems that, even in a race without Tadej Pogačar, Remco Evenepoel, and Paul Seixas, he’s not going to be allowed an easy ride.

“I think I’m in a good spot at the moment. I’m pretty close to the pink jersey now,” Vingegaard told Cycling Pro Net at the finish. “It would have been nice to be in the pink jersey already because every day in the jersey is something you have to be happy about.

“I’ll be happy with the blue jersey,” he said, referring to his lead in the KoM classification.

The Viaregio time trial on Tuesday totally upended the classification ahead of the mountainous back-end of the Giro d’Italia.

Arensman, Ben O’Connor (Jayco-AlUla), Michael Storer (Tudor), and Derek Gee-West (Lidl-Trek) moved several slots up the ranking after they came out of the rest day hot.

Felix Gall (Decathlon CMA CGM) crumbled in “The Race of Truth.”

The Austrian had emerged as Vingegaard’s closest climbing rival in the opening nine days of racing but lost around 90 seconds in the GC fight.

Red Bull-Bora-Hansgrohe leadership pair Jai Hindley and Giulio Pellizzari also hemorrhaged time after a sickness swept through their team over the weekend.

And guess what?

Italian powerhouse Ganna won his seventh Giro d’Italia TT after blitzing a flat 42km course that couldn’t have been better suited for him.

The huge Italian powered his 64T chainring around the parcours at an average of 55kph to set the winning time of 45:53.

“I really love long time trials like this,” Ganna said at the finish. “I’m happy that there was finally a good time trial for me, without climbs.”

Arensman and Rémi Cavagna (Groupama-FDJ) finished 2-3 on the stage after they stopped the clock nearly two minutes slower than Ganna – that’s 2kph of a difference over the 42km route.
