A solo pilot survived an Elko County plane crash rescue on Sunday after a multi-agency operation spanning the better part of a day extracted him from the remote East Humboldt Mountain Range in northeastern Nevada, the Elko County Sheriff’s Office announced.
iPhone Alert Triggers Elko County Plane Crash Rescue
Dispatch received an iPhone crash alert at approximately 10:30 a.m., leading rescuers to the rugged area south of Hole in the Mountain Peak in Clover Valley. The GPS coordinates placed the downed aircraft in one of Elko County’s most inaccessible stretches of terrain.
The small plane struck the mountain at roughly 10,200 feet above sea level, above the snow line and amid poor weather conditions. According to OpenSnow, the area saw six inches of fresh snow between 9 a.m. and 2 p.m. Sunday morning. The pilot, the aircraft’s only occupant, was alive and reported minor injuries.
Heavy Cloud Cover Grounds Air Assets, Forces Ground Advance
Dense cloud cover over the East Humboldt range grounded air rescue assets through the morning hours, forcing first responders from the Elko County Sheriff’s Office, the Clover Valley Fire Department, and MedEx to proceed on foot toward the crash site. They did so knowing a ground evacuation across steep, rugged terrain may ultimately be required.
Skies Clear, Helicopter Airlift Saves Injured Pilot
Conditions shifted by early afternoon. By mid-afternoon, skies cleared enough to permit a helicopter rescue, and the injured pilot was safely airlifted off the mountain.
Nine Agencies Credited in the Elko County Plane Crash Rescue
Undersheriff Justin Ames credited the outcome to coordinated teamwork among a broad coalition of responders. The sheriff’s office recognized the following agencies in its official release: El Aero Services, Briarpatch Defense Systems, Elko County Search and Rescue, the Elko County Regional Dispatch Center, the Deeth Volunteer Fire Department, Station 34, the Clover Valley Volunteer Fire Department, the Ruby Valley Volunteer Fire Department, and MedEx.
The pilot’s identity has not been released. The cause of the crash remains under investigation. Federal aviation authorities have not issued a statement at the time of publication.
