Jonas Vingegaard has got a special red bike helmet, and now he’s got a special red nail, too.
Vingegaard kickstarted his quest for the pink jersey of the Giro d’Italia sporting a single red nail on Friday.
His Visma-Lease a Bike teammates – including “The Kingmaker” Sepp Kuss – are all rocking the same look for Friday’s grande partenza in Bulgaria.
And being Visma-Lease a Bike, it’s not just a prank – it’s for a reason.
“It’s for a good cause, for a cause to improve children’s conditions in Denmark,” Vingegaard explained on a team post on social media. “Every sixth child is getting abused, either mentally or physically, by their parents. We want to fight this.
“Every child deserves to have good conditions at home,” Vingegaard said. “It’s a very important cause.”
It’s a prime PR play, and none of us could help from being curious.
Vingegaard is one of the most family-centric superstars of the sport.
He calls his wife Trine immediately after racing and shuns excessive altitude training to be home with her and their two young children.
And why the red helmet?
He’s been wearing that for more than a year as part of a branding exercise with team sponsor Bygma.
