Star Fox 64 AKA Lylat Wars was originally released in 1997. The space shooter game focuses on pilot Fox McCloud and his team trying to stop disgraced scientist Andross from destroying the Lylat system. The original was one of the best-selling N64 games, shifting more than 4million copies.

A 3D remake was released on the Nintendo 3DS in 2011 while a reimagined version came to the WiiU in 2016. The original game is currently available to Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack subscribers.

However a new take on the classic game is on the way. Star Fox will be released June 25 for the Nintendo Switch 2.

According to a press release, Star Fox is “based on” Star Fox 64 and features a “complete visual overhaul that takes full advantage of the power and performance of Nintendo Switch 2.” The remake also includes all-new cinematic cutscenes featuring fully voiced dialogue and never-before-seen mission briefings between stages alongside a new orchestral soundtrack.

As well as the returning ‘Campaign’ and ‘Challenge’ modes, you can also take part in all-new multiplayer dogfights in ‘Battle’ mode. Up to eight players can play as either Team Star Fox or Team Star Wolf to achieve a trio of different objectives – secure control of a designated zone on Corneria, collect energy crystals on Fichina, or retrieve cargo from space pirates in Sector Y.

Star Fox will also make use of the Nintendo Switch 2’s mouse control while new augmented reality avatars can be used on GameChat.

The surprise Star Fox remake comes after Fox McCloud appeared in this year’s Super Mario Galaxy Movie, voiced by Glen Powell. Following the cameo, a report claimed a new Star Fox game would be released this year alongside a remake of The Legend Of Zelda: Ocarina Of Time. The same report said that a new 3D Mario title wouldn’t be released until 2027.

In other news, the team behind Black Myth: Wukong has confirmed details of a 2026 global tour to celebrate the game’s incredible soundtrack.
