Toprak Razgatlioglu penalised for Savadori clash in Jerez MotoGP Sprint
Toprak Razgatlioglu penalised for MotoGP Sprint clash at Jerez.
Toprak Razgatlioglu has been given a long lap penalty for Sunday’s Spanish MotoGP after ‘causing a crash’ with Lorenzo Savadori in the Sprint.
The reigning WorldSBK champion made contact with the Aprilia wild-card rider while battling over 19th place, just as rain disrupted the race.
The penalty marks Razgatlioglu’s first offence since joining MotoGP.
The FIM MotoGP Stewards stated: “Following the Penalty Protocols issued to teams, this action was deemed to be an incident of Type MGP-CC3: Causing a crash or causing a crash whilst overtaking. Contact with another rider resulting in another rider crashing.
“As a first offence for the season, the appropriate penalty in this case is a Long Lap Penalty.”
Razgatlioglu: “I‘m very sorry”
“When the rain started, I saw an opportunity as the pace dropped, so I tried to push harder,” Razgatlioglu explained.
“At Turn 5 I attempted to pass both Salvadori and Morbidelli, but I went onto a dirty line and, with the track becoming very slippery, I lost the front.
“I‘m very sorry for involving Salvadori in the crash. That was not my intention. As soon as I fell, I went to check on him, and I was very relieved to see that he was OK.”
Savadori said of the incident: “Another rider did a mistake and I did a very big crash.
“So fortunately, I’m not injured, nothing broken in my body, but I’m not at 100%. I hope to be in a better shape for the race.”
Razgatlioglu joins Jorge Martin (three-place grid penalty), Joan Mir (double long lap), Franco Morbidelli (fine and practice suspension) and Pramac Yamaha team-mate Jack Miller (double long lap) in being penalised so far this weekend.
Miller was penalised during the Sprint, for speeding in pit lane, and eventually finished in 16th place.
Razgatlioglu will start Sunday’s grand prix from 19th on the grid.
