Reigning MotoGP champion Marc Marquez will start from pole position for the first time this season after ruling a wet qualifying at Jerez.

The factory Ducati star and LCR Honda’s Johann Zarco were head and shoulders clear of the field in the tricky conditions, with Marc Marquez celebrating his first pole since Hungary last season by 0.140s.

Fabio di Giannantonio couldn’t extend his pole run to three in a row but still put his VR46 machine on the outside of the front row in third.

Aprilia’s title leader Marco Bezzecchi stayed out of trouble for fourth with last year’s winner and dry Friday leader, Alex Marquez, among the fallers on his way to fifth.

KTM’s Pedro Acosta joined Zarco in fighting through Qualifying 1, before claiming the last place on row two.

Jorge Martin (Aprilia), Enea Bastianini (Tech3 KTM) and Raul Fernandez (Trackhouse Aprilia) will form row three – but only for the Sprint.

Martin has a three-place penalty for Sunday’s grand prix after riding slowly on the racing line and disturbing Alex Marquez at the end of Friday practice.

That penalty will move Marquez’s team-mate Pecco Bagnaia from tenth on the grid to the outside of row three on Sunday.

Honda’s Joan Mir will be forced to serve a double long lap penalty in the grand prix for ‘not respecting’ black-and-orange flags in final practice.

Wild-card Augusto Fernandez starts as the leading Yamaha rider, in 16th.

Tech3’s Maverick Vinales is absent after undergoing shoulder surgery and has not been replaced.

However, Yamaha test rider Augusto Fernandez and Aprilia test rider Lorenzo Savadori are making their first wild-card appearances of the season this weekend.

The 12-lap Sprint starts at 3pm local time.
