MotoGP tweaks delayed start procedure – the changes explained
MotoGP extends the countdown time if a race start is delayed on the grid.
MotoGP has announced a minor change to its delayed start procedure, which will be in effect from this weekend’s Spanish Grand Prix.
From Jerez, if a MotoGP race start is delayed on the grid, the countdown to the warm-up lap will now resume from the 5-minute board rather than the 3-minute board.
The extended period is to allow teams enough warning to stop work on the bikes.
The full rule change can be seen below:
‘The Grand Prix Commission has approved an update of Article 1.18.18 – Start Delayed. It takes effect immediately, from the Estrella Galicia 0,0 Grand Prix of Spain at Jerez onwards.
‘After a Start Delayed is declared on the grid, the previous regulation said that the grid countdown would resume at the 3-minute board. This does not give teams enough warning of when they must stop work on the bikes.
‘The regulation has therefore been updated. After a Start Delayed is declared on the grid, the countdown to the Warm Up lap will now resume at the 5-minute board.
‘This gives teams sufficient warning of when they must stop work on the bike, which is at the 3-minute board.’
