This 1,212g Carbon Wheelset Claims to Be Faster Than Enve and Roval

Sea Otter is known for gravel, but walk around the venue and you’ll find incredible road wheels. One of the more interesting among them was the newly launched Hunt 5AM Limitless Ti_UD Carbon Spoke Wheelset. This is a wheelset that’s impressively light, but it’s also fast. Hunt claims it’s faster than the Enve 4.5 Pro, the Scope Artech 6, and the Roval Rapide Sprint when paired with 30mm tires. The price is also impressive, but how did Hunt achieve all this?

Weight and aero are intrinsically linked, but they are also opposing forces. On one side of the equation is the push for aero, and that means a deeper wheel.

Hunt is, like many others, choosing to optimize front and rear wheels independently, but the brand is also one of the few switching up what you’d expect. Rather than a shallower front, the Hunt 5AM Limitless uses a deeper 58mm front wheel and a shallower 55mm rear wheel. The internal width for both is 23mm, and the bead is hooked. External width, however, changes from front to rear, with 34.5mm up front and 30mm out back. As always, Hunt has receipts showing impressive numbers in the tunnel to back up the statements.

To manage the weight of a fairly deep wheelset, Hunt attacked the challenge from a couple of different directions. The most visible is the spoke count, featuring 15 front and 18 rear Vonoa Ti_UD carbon spokes. I’m told this reduced spoke count also helps the aero, but obviously, less is more if you are looking to trim weight, and each spoke is a mere 1.7g.

The less visible weight management in the 5AM Limitless is in the carbon itself. Hunt reduced the rim walls because less carbon means less weight. Unfortunately, you also have to support the carbon in a wheel, and Hunt managed that by changing the carbon blend to a mix of T700, T800, and T1000 UD carbon fibers, plus high-modulus Mitsubishi Pyrofil HR4012M. Then, Hunt used a combination of clever spoke bracing and creative layup to keep that from turning into an overly stiff and brittle wheel.

The result is a 1,212-gram wheelset that costs $2,599 for steel bearings or $3,199 for CeramicSpeed bearings.
