Amstel Gold Race, it’s the race of a thousand hills that’s called an “Ardennes classic” even though it’s not hosted in the Ardennes.
Playing out over a relentlessly spikey course in the Dutch Limburg, the Amstel Gold Race is one of the most overlooked classics on the men’s and women’s calendars.
Expect drama galore on a fiddly parcours littered with steep ramps and tricky descents. A dash up the iconic Cauberg and a reduced sprint of the strongest decide who gets the winner’s oversized beer.
Tadej Pogačar, Pauline Ferrand-Prévot, and Mathieu van der Poel aren’t racing this Sunday, April 19, but who cares?
The startlists for the WorldTour double-header are deep.
Remco Evenepoel, Demi Vollering, Matteo Jorgenson, and defending champions Mattias Skjelmose and Mischa Bredewold top the bill. USA’s Olympic superstar Kristen Faulkner also has the race circled in her calendar.
These prime puncheurs will then travel over to the Belgian Ardennes for quad-sapping brawls next week with Pogi, PFP, and Paul Seixas at La Flèche Wallonne and Liège Bastogne Liège.
Sadly, Isaac del Toro and Tom Pidcock are not expected to be racing Amstel Gold Race after injury setbacks thwarted their plans.
