Marc Marquez seeks missing “step” during Aragon training
MotoGP champion Marc Marquez trains at Aragon as he seeks “a step in myself more than the bike” ahead of Jerez.
Marc Marquez plans to use the extended break caused by the Qatar postponement to make “a step” in his physical condition, after identifying himself as the main limitation in the early MotoGP rounds.
Since returning from last year’s shoulder surgery, the reigning nine-time world champion has been unable to get the most from his factory Ducati during the opening race laps.
That’s when the bike is at its most physical, with a full fuel tank and maximum tyre grip.
“A step in myself, more than in the bike”
“Myself is missing, not the bike,” Marquez said after overcoming a long lap penalty on his way to fifth place at the US Grand Prix, where he also suffered lacerations to his arms in FP1.
“In the first laps when the tyres are new, the bike becomes more aggressive, and I can’t ride well at the moment.
“It looks like I get used to being in a position, not a natural position, on the bike, and I’m just riding.
“Still, I’m fast, but I cannot make the difference.
“Especially I want to do a step in myself, more than in the bike.”
Aragon training
As part of that quest, the nine-time world champion has been training at Aragon this week (scroll to the fifth image below).
Rather than the grand prix circuit, Marquez – currently fifth in the world championship, with one Sprint victory but no grand prix podiums – was riding on the karting layout aboard a Ducati Panigale V2.
The next round of the season, Marquez’s home Spanish MotoGP at Jerez, takes place from April 24–26, followed by the first official in-season test of the year.
Aragon will host its MotoGP round in late August.
