Arvid Lindblad has been compared favourably to seven-time Formula 1 world champion Lewis Hamilton by a man who coached both drivers, Dino Chiesa.

Lindblad has risen swiftly through the ranks to gain his position on the F1 grid with Racing Bulls this season, making the move after a single year in feeder series F2, claiming three race wins along the way.

Scoring points on his F1 debut in Australia, the Briton – who has a Swedish father and a British-Indian mother – made an immediate mark, and has continued to demonstrate his youthful no fear brand of racing in China and Japan.

Kart Republic coach Chiesa has a strong track record of developing talent, with championship leader Kimi Antonelli racing alongside Lindblad during that period of his career, and world championship Hamilton and Nico Rosberg also being coached by the Italian.“He is a very smooth and clever driver. That was very positive because he can change his driving style if he needs to.

“He learns quickly and is a technical driver, adapting his braking or style to suit different tyres or chassis,” Chiesa told The Sun. “He is also very quick in the rain.

“I would say he is more like Lewis. Nico was very polite and more willing to accept a second-place finish than Lewis or Arvid.

“Arvid is really aggressive in races; he doesn’t wait or calculate everything. When he reaches another driver, he overtakes immediately. However, because he is clever, he doesn’t get involved in many incidents or big crashes.”

There is a popular belief in sports that to be the best, you must be selfish. While this may lessen somewhat when racing in a midfield team, and the unifying goal is to edge the outfit forward to create better opportunities somewhere down the line, in karting and the junior formulae, focus is solely on individual achievement.

Of one particular run-in with Lindblad, Chiesa said: “He spent three very good years with me, but when he finished P2 behind a team-mate he immediately said to me, ‘f*** you, you gave the best engine to him’.

“He’s only 14, but if you think like that, your career will go wrong. You have to accept what you have and drive and make sure you’re at your best…

“He will be good for Red Bull, but sometimes he needs to learn to count to ten before he says something because he can be really passionate and maybe say the wrong thing.

“You have to be polite when you arrive in F1. When you become a Verstappen or Hamilton, you can say what you want, but until then, you have to be more political, and Arvid is no politician.”
