Vail Mountain Closing Day 2026 Moved Up to April 8
Vail Mountain, Colorado’s, closing day 2026 is Wednesday, April 8 — pulled forward 11 days from its previously projected April 19 date, as warm temperatures and true spring conditions decimate the snowpack.
The resort had been requiring guests to download since April 2, with both Gondola One to Vail Village and Gondola 19 to Lionshead running during operational hours. A late storm briefly offered a reprieve, delivering 12 inches of fresh snow to upper elevations, but it was not enough. With warm temperatures rolling in and the lower-mountain snowpack deteriorating rapidly, Vail made the call to wrap up the season.
A Season to Forget: The Collapse Across the American West
The closure is the latest in what has been a historically grim winter across the American West. Both Colorado’s and Utah’s 2025–26 season has been described as the worst in 50 years, with a persistent high-pressure system repeatedly diverting Pacific storm systems away from the Rockies. Neighboring resort Beaver Creek was already forced to close two weeks before its projected date. In Utah, the snowpack peaked at 75% of average in late February before collapsing to just 15% of median by late March. In California, the Sierra Nevada snowpack sat at less than half of its historical average, the leanest season since 2015, according to data from the California Department of Water Resources, prompting Palisades Tahoe, historically the last major resort in the Lake Tahoe region to close, to end its season roughly a month earlier than planned.
The industry has seen unprecedented early closures outside of a pandemic, with dozens of ski areas in the West calling it a season weeks ahead of schedule. Some smaller resorts in New Mexico, Idaho, Nevada, and the Pacific Northwest never opened at all or closed as early as February.
Final Days Before Vail Mountain’s Closing Day 2026
With 19 of its 277 runs open at the time of the announcement, Vail is closing out the season with a packed schedule of events across the final days. This Saturday, April 4, The 10th hosts its 3rd Annual Pig Roast from 11:30 a.m.–2:30 p.m. (reservations via Tock), followed by the 100 Day Milestone Party at Express Lift Bar from 2–5 p.m., honoring skiers who have logged 100 days on the hill with gifts from Helly Hansen, Oakley, and GoPro. Sunday, April 5 brings a Mountain Top Sunrise Service at Eagle’s Nest — free upload at 6 a.m., service beginning at 6:30 a.m. — and Après All Day at Express Lift from 2–5 p.m. with DJ Alana English.
Closing Day on April 8 culminates with a party at Avanti from 1–5 p.m., with the celebrations carrying into the following day at the Town of Vail End of Season Bash at Checkpoint Charlie from 3–7 p.m. Après at The Amp then closes out the season at the Gerald R. Ford Amphitheater on April 10 and 11 for its fourth year, headlined by Grammy-winning DJ Tiësto and Purple Disco Machine, co-presented by the Vail Valley Foundation, Vail Mountain, Discover Vail, and AEG Presents.
