As many ski areas are announcing early closures, a few ski areas in the Midwest and on the East Coast will continue spinning the lifts, thanks to record-breaking snowpacks. Mount Bohemia, the Upper Peninsula’s famed ungroomed and no beginners ski area, recently announced it will stay open on weekends only through May 10.

The Keweenaw Peninsula, where Mount Bohemia is located, has received more than 350 inches of snow this winter. That puts Mount Bohemia ahead of Jackson Hole (342 inches), Alta (310 inches), Palisades Tahoe (305 inches), Mammoth (253), Big Sky (231 inches), Steamboat Springs (169 inches), and many other western ski areas. According to snowfall records from Keweenaw County, just five winters out of the last two decades have had more than 300 inches of snowfall.

Mount Bohemia is located high in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula and features glade runs and powder that are unmatched in the Midwest. With a 900-foot vertical drop, it blows many other resorts in the region out of the water. The mountain’s backcountry-style terrain offers an experience that rivals the Rocky Mountains. While Mount Bohemia may have only two chairlifts, it spans 620 acres of skiable terrain across eight unique sections, making it one of the largest ski resorts in the Midwest

Elsewhere, east of the Mississippi, Camelback Mountain has announced it plans to operate until May. Many other ski areas in New York, Vermont, New Hampshire, and Maine have not announced closing dates yet. The eastern half of the country continues to ride the momentum of a record-breaking winter into an all-time spring season. Camelback Mountain Resort in Pennsylvania features an 800-foot vertical drop and 166 acres of skiable terrain. Known as a major Poconos destination, it offers 33 trails as well as night skiing.

For skiers and riders in the Midwest and East, this season is shaping up to be one to be remembered and retold. While many mountains out West are already winding down, resorts east of the Mississippi are still going strong, powered by a winter that delivered well above-average snowfall. This could be one of the most memorable spring ski seasons the East and Midwest have seen in decades — so  make sure to be part of this historic winter.
