A suspect in a shooting at Temple Israel Synagogue in West Bloomfield, Michigan, was shot dead on Thursday, a law enforcement official said.

The Oakland County Sheriff’s Office (OSCO) and the FBI earlier responded to reports of an active shooter at a synagogue in the suburb of Detroit on Thursday.

“OSCO and multiple agencies on scene at Temple Israel West Bloomfield for reports of an active shooter. Emergency personnel clearing the building. Updates to follow,” the OSCO wrote online.

FBI Director Kash Patel meanwhile said FBI personnel were also on the scene, responding to an apparent vehicle ramming and active shooter situation.

Preliminary reports say suspect is dead

Soon after, outlets including the Associated Press, Reuters and CNN cited law enforcement sources as saying that the suspect was dead. AP cited its source as saying the suspect rammed his vehicle into the building, with the vehicle catching fire after the crash, and was then fatally shot.

Oakland County Sheriff Michael Bouchard said a security guard was injured in the ramming and is now receiving care in the hospital.

Footage from the scene showed large numbers of emergency vehicles parked near the building and a relatively modest amount of smoke rising from the scene.

The Jewish Federation of Detroit posted a message on its Facebook page saying it was “currently in precautionary lockdown” in response to the reports and instructing members to go into “lockdown protocol.”

White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said US President Donald Trump was informed about the situation.

This comes amid the US-Israeli military campaign against Iran that began roughly two weeks ago.
