What I Put on My Face

All skin is good skin, which is why good skincare is more of a journey than a destination. We all love a one-off tip, but at Byrdie, we’re more interested in how our skin evolves over time. The product we’ve used for a decade, the ingredient cocktail that made us glow, the step we never skip, and all the advice in between. This is the stuff that makes a real difference. With What I Put on My Face, we’re bringing you the rituals, recommendations, and failed experiments (we’ve all had them) straight from celebrities, founders, and influencers who’ve gone through it themselves.

Nicole Richie learned her first skincare lesson as a toddler. “I have Southern parents, and my mom specifically told me from the time I was three years old, you are never going to leave this out house without being fully moisturized.”

That early directive stuck. Now 44, the actress and designer approaches skincare with the confidence of someone who’s spent decades paying attention—learning her skin, refining her routine, and editing her beauty cabinet down to what actually deserves a spot. That’s precisely why Eucerin tapped her as a partner for its “Radiant Tone” collection, a line specifically formulated to reduce the look of dark spots (something Richie has dealt with over the years). “I’ve been a long-time user of Eucerin,” she says. “I’ve been a big fan of their body lotions. It’s a brand that I trust.”

Ahead, the House of Harlow founder fills us in on her current skincare routine, how her approach to skincare has evolved, and more.

About Her Skin

“I love the sun. I always have. I never listen to anyone telling me not bask in the sun. It’s one of my favorite activities. So, I did know that I would get dark spots, and I knew that I deserved it when that happened, and here we are.”

Her Current Head-to-Toe Routine

“For my body care routine, I use exfoliation gloves and oils in the shower, and always apply lotion afterward. As for my skincare routine, I keep it pretty simple. I have a less-is-more approach. I have rosacea, so the more complicated my routine and the more products I use, the more likely I am to get a flare-up. So for me, the goal is always to keep my skin calm, hydrated, and healthy.”

Her Current Go-To Product

“Eucerin has this great dark spot serum—the Radiant Tone Dual Serum. It works really well.”

Her Approach to Beauty in Her 20s

“I would try anything and everything because it was fun. I didn’t grow up with a Sephora the way my teenage daughter is growing up with one now. You walk in there, and it’s like a candy store of beauty products. It’s fun to try the sheet masks, this product, that product—or if your friend is using something trendy, you want to try it too. But I definitely had my own version of that. However, I quickly realized that I’m not someone who can just put anything on my skin. I know there’s this thing people are talking about right now—I don’t know if it’s a trend—but it’s called skin flooding, where you flood your face with products. That is basically the opposite of what I do now.”

Her Thoughts on Skincare in Her 40s

“I want healthy skin and an even complexion. I’m not trying to have the hottest this or whatever. I’m not looking for something short-term or temporary. I’m focused on addressing my dark spots—but not in a way where they disappear in five minutes and then suddenly come back even darker, which honestly happens with a lot of dark spot treatments. So using a brand like Eucerin, which has real, long-lasting effects on your skin, feels really good to me. I guess what I’m saying is—I’m in it for the long game.”

How She Approaches Skincare With Her Kids

“I take a pretty relaxed approach with them because I don’t ever want them to feel like I’m telling them what to do. And at the same time, I do think when you’re young, try all the things—just do it. Their skin can bounce back. We do talk about sunscreen and skin health. I’d say my kids probably see what I’m doing more than me sitting down and having a conversation about it.”
