The “Frosted” French Manicure Trend Is Getting Us Through Winter

For the chill girls.

Key Takeaways

  • “Frosted” French manicures are trending this winter.
  • Think a chrome-topped traditional nude-and-white French manicure that catches the light like frost creeping up a window.

Sorry, February icicles, but you’re way less special to look at when you’re not surrounded by twinkling Christmas lights. I’m no longer into the ice on my car in the mornings anymore, either (though that was always a harder sell than pretty snowflakes).

One thing I am still loving this winter, though? Frosted manicures! Particularly when they’re of the French variety. The chill isn’t going anywhere anytime soon—a groundhog made a promise about that recently??—so we might as well appreciate the frost when and where we can.

This winter, we’re seeing “Frosted” French manicures pop up on our favorite nail artists’ Instagram feeds.

Compared to the frosted tip manicures we were loving earlier this winter, the traditional white French tip fully comes through here. (Instead of only the top getting a bit of shimmer, the whole nail has it going on.)

The look is also different from glazed chrome in that the “frostiness” has a little more grit than a super-fine glaze might. It’s up to you how much frost you can handle, but you could even go so far as to paint a glitter coat over your regular old French set to get the look.

Where You’ve Seen It

Earlier this month, nail artist Kim Truong posted a Frosted French nail look she created for Ella Mai’s new album cover. She called it a “mirrored French” mani. The singer’s nails were filed into a short, square shape, complete with baby French tips and a shimmery sheen that caught the light.

Really though, the idea is nothing new. We’ve been seeing variations of the Frosted French manicure since Hailey Bieber made the world go crazy for chrome a few years ago. Almost every big nail artist has shown us their own version, and they’ve even popped up in fun colors like butter yellow and baby blue.

How to Get the Look

While Truong shared that she used Mia Secret’s Gelux Gel Nail Polishes in Naked and White topped with the brand’s mirror chrome powder in CM104 to get Mai’s look, there are so many ways you can go about it. I’m sure your salon will know just the thing to do if you request a chrome French.

Or, if you already have a favorite French manicure nail combo, go with that and request a light layer of chrome powder on top.

You could also grab a set of press ons for easy application. Olive & June’s Chrome French set is perfect.

Besides that… stay warm! And happy frosting. The sun will be out eventually, and for now we’ll catch the light however we can. It’s a big task for your fingernails to take on, but I’m sure they’re up to it.
