The Tour du Rwanda has been hit by tragedy with the deaths of two spectators during the opening stage.

The organizers announced the news in a statement, confirming a number of others were also struck by a publicity vehicle on Sunday.

“The management of the Tour du Rwanda regrets to inform the public of an accident that occurred today during stage 1 in the Gabiro area, where a caravan vehicle veered off the road and hit several spectators.

“Sadly, two people lost their lives and six others were injured. The injured are receiving care, and we are closely following their condition.”

The opening stage took the riders 173.6km from Rukomo to Rwamagana and, despite the tragedy, continued to the finish.

Itamar Einhorn (NSN Development Team) won a big sprint to the line ahead of Hodei Muñoz (Soudal Quick-Step Devo Team) and Mewael Girmay (Istanbul Team).

It is not clear if the eight day race will continue as planned on Monday. The matter is under scrutiny.

“The Rwanda National Police has launched investigations into the cause. We extend our sincere condolences to the families affected and remain committed to public safety,” stated the organizers.

Stage two of the event is due to run between Nyamata and Huye. The race is ranked 2.1 on the UCI’s international calendar.

The news is a blow to cycling in the region. Rwanda hosted an impressive edition of the road world championships last September and the current national Tour is part of the efforts to build upon that success.
