The One Thing

Our series The One Thing is a Sparknotes version of the products, rituals, and moments your favorite celebrities and influencers swear by—their go-tos, must-haves, and can’t-live-withouts. So go ahead—take a brief, intimate peek into the lives of your favorites through the things (and people, and moments) they hold dear.

Audrey Hobert has big BFF energy. By that I mean listening to her (fabulous) debut album, Who’s the Clown, feels like a long, juicy catchup with a best friend. It’s candid, funny, and a little off-kilter, just like Hobert herself. The fact that she’s actual BFFs with Gracie Abrams—Hobert, a TV writer by trade, got her start writing songs with Abrams before recording her own stuff—is just the icing on the cake.

While I sadly will not be sharing a matching best friends necklace with Hobert, (and Abrams, for that matter), I can match her go-to lip combo. On February 10, the singer joins the ranks of Clairo and Solange as the latest artist to collab with Ilia on a special makeup edit. Hobert’s includes the brand’s brand-new Overglaze Hydrating Lip Gloss in the raspberry red Studio, as well as the Sketch Hydrating Lip Crayon in Blue Note, a cool cherry. Plus, it all comes packaged in the cutest limited-edition tote bag.

In honor of the edit, we caught up with Hobert to chat her go-to lip look, her pre-show ritual, and the song she can’t belive she wrote.

On Her Ilia Collab

“My edit is lip-forward; I usually have a lip color on—it makes me feel confident and, yes, even unique. I have worn Ilia makeup on my own dime for years, so to working with them felt like something true in this world, not forced, and exciting for me.

“I love a classic red, and I especially love the look of the lip gloss. Just one swipe, it’s subtle but still you can see it.”

The One Beauty Look That Makes Her Feel Herself

“A lip color, and recently I’ve gotten into brown eyeshadow.”

Her On Tour Makeup Routine and Ritual

“My makeup philosophy for tour was to keep it light and fresh. Pre-show rituals included my vocal warm ups and putting on my show outfit.”

The Essentials Always In Her Bag

“Gum, wallet, and four to five different lip products.”

The One Song She’s the Most Proud Of

“I’m proud of ‘Bowling Alley’ because I remember how fun it was to write, and how with each line I’d sort of look around bewildered like, Is anyone seeing this? But no one was there.”

The One Outfit She Can Always Count On

“Recently it’s gym shorts and a zip up.”
