Byrdie

TL;DR

Byrdie editors love baggy jeans—our favorite pair is DL1961’s Taylor Relaxed Barrel Ultra High Rise Jeans, thanks to their versatility and comfortable fit. For anyone needing a pair of baggy jeans for a petite frame, the Levi’s Baggy Dad Jean is an editor-approved pair that truly goes with everything.

As Gen Z has famously declared: Skinny jeans are out. Whether or not you believe that at your core, it’s objectively true that baggy jeans have been increasingly taking real estate at our favorite retailers, both designer and affordable. To a baggy jeans novice, the edgier, loose-fitting style can feel more intimidating to style, especially if your wardrobe leans more polished or preppy. However, our team of fashion-forward editors at Byrdie is determined to show that this style of jeans is versatile, chic, and essential.

After pulling from our own cherished denim collections and even testing out a few new-to-the-market pairs, we narrowed down a list of the best baggy jeans, from subtly baggy (for those wanting to dip their toes into the trend) to really baggy (if you want to dive in headfirst, which we highly encourage), for everyone’s taste and budget. We also tapped a stylist for tips on incorporating baggy jeans into your outfit rotation, whether they’re new to you or already in your closet. Ahead, find the baggy jeans worth investing in.

What We Like
  • Versatile design

  • Keeps loose fit for all heights

  • Extensive size range

What to Consider
  • Not true “barrel” shape

Size Range: 23-34 | Inseam: 31 inches | Rise: High

It’s significant when one of our shopping editors calls a pair of baggy jeans “the best jeans [she’s] ever worn,” considering how often our team tests different styles. This was the case for Shannon Stubbs, writer and baggy-jeans convert, thanks to the Taylor Relaxed Barrel from DL1961, who often has bad luck finding baggy jeans that suit her long legs and wide hips at the same time. However, this pair checked all her boxes, with ample bagginess all the way down the leg and an overall comfortable feel.

It’s worth noting that although this pair is labeled as “barrel,” the shape of the legs on this style is very subtly reminiscent of classic barrel jeans—Stubbs notes the pair is only slightly structured, though mostly at the waist due to the no-stretch fit.

Shannon Stubbs, writer: “These go with pretty much anything in my closet. They’re also seriously comfortable and easy to wear all day. You can tell that the material is high quality and will last you a long time.”

What We Like
  • Loose fit that can be dressed up or down

  • Adjustable waist

  • Numerous inseam lengths available

What to Consider
  • Fabric is on the thinner side

Size Range: US 0-12 | Inseam: 26, 28, 30, 32, 34, and 36 inches | Rise: Low

If you’re more interested in super baggy styles over a more understated wide-leg design, consider this pair from Asos. The oversized fit is what initially drew Senior Editor Dominique Hobdy to this pair, allowing her usual denim outfits to be more dramatic, fun, and fashion-forward. Though this pair is distressed, giving them a more casual, edgier vibe, it comes in five other shades (including one with a funky camo pattern for the maximalists), ranging from light to dark washes.

Another element we love about these jeans? There are several sizes and inseam lengths (Hobdy opted for the 34-inch option—she’s 5 feet, 10 inches) available, and the waist is also adjustable to ensure the perfect fit.

Dominique Hobdy, senior editor: “These are the ideal, effortlessly cool jeans that are on trend but timeless. They’re ready for everything from trotting around on a shopping trip to meeting friends for a drink. You can pair a really pretty, flowy top with them for juxtaposition, or play into the grunge, whatever the vibe is!”

  • Extensive size range caters to several heights and body types

  • Comfortable mid-rise fit

  • Versatile, classic blue shade

What to Consider
  • Black Rinse Wash felt different than the classic Harvey Wash after ordering

Size Range: 23-33 (standard, petite, short, tall, and plus size ranges) | Inseam: 34 inches | Rise: High rise

Finding a pair of baggy jeans for tall women that actually look baggy from top-to-bottom is a challenge that Byrdie Senior Editor Lauren Pardee knows all too well (her words exactly: “it’s almost unheard of”)—until she discovered Madewell’s The Tall Perfect Vintage Wide Leg Jean. Aside from the 34-inch inseam, which suits her long legs, Pardee loves the mid-rise fit, which covers her midriff while still allowing a relaxed feel without the waistline feeling too loose (she normally avoids tight, high-rise fits). The versatile, classic blue Harvey Wash matches just about everything and is easy to dress up or down, especially with its understated, distress-free design.

Lauren Pardee, senior editor: “I don’t think I’ve ever worn a pair of jeans this much. The main reason I can’t live without them: the 34-inch inseam, which is every long-legged, tall girl’s dream.”

What We Like
  • Soft, comfortable denim

  • Drawstrings allow you to adjust the hems

  • Unique low-waisted, waistband-less design

What to Consider
  • Drawstring toggles at the hems give you limited shoe options

Size Range: 22-32 | Inseam: 32 inches | Rise: Low

Byrdie writer Maddie Barber is a self-described denim devotee, and most of her jeans are from Still Here, the denim brand that every it girl seems to be wearing these days (including Jennifer Lawrence and Zoe Kravitz). This pair, called the “Sport Jean,” is unique to other pairs she’s tried thanks to the adjustable drawstring toggles at each hem and the lack of a traditional waistband, making it significantly more comfortable (and aesthetically cooler).

Between its low-waisted fit and true wide-leg baggy design, the Sport Jean is the only denim Barber will reach for on days when she wants to be comfortable but still look put-together. Not to mention the style works for any season, whether paired with her favorite square-toe flip-flops and a white tee in the summer or with a chunky sweater and clogs in the fall or winter.

Maddie Barber, writer: “The Sport Jean filled a gap in my closet that I didn’t even know I had. I wear these any chance I get, no matter what time of year it is.”

What We Like
  • Comfortable low-rise fit

  • Versatile, vintage-inspired colorways

  • Soft denim

What to Consider
  • Run a bit long

Size Range: 24-31 | Inseam: 32 inches | Rise: Low

While we love a Y2K fashion moment, we think this low-rise jean from Just Black Denim is a better alternative for the modern-day shopper. Unlike the super low-rise options of the early 2000s, which feel like a wardrobe malfunction waiting to happen, Stubbs loves how this low-rise pair sits at the perfect spot on her waist and still feels comfortable. She has long legs, but finds this pair to still be baggy all the way down to her ankles without looking ill-proportioned. Even for her taller stature, she found the hems to be a bit long, so keep this in mind if you’re a petite shopper.

Shannon Stubbs, writer: “These low-rise jeans are cute and comfortable. They’re made of a very soft material, and they are perfectly baggy without looking unshapely. They look great with pretty much everything I have in my closet.”

What We Like
  • Comes in multiple inseam lengths

  • Versatile design

  • Multiple washes available

What to Consider
  • Material is on the thin side

Size Range: 23-24 | Inseam: 30, 32, 34 inches | Rise: Mid

If there’s one pair of jeans that will earn you compliments every time you leave the house, it’s Levi’s Baggy Dad Jeans. Barber’s first foray into the baggier style and the perfect fit for her petite stature, this pair comes in a variety of inseam lengths to accommodate all body types. They’re ideal for anyone interested in wider-leg denim who desires a more versatile, minimalist style. With several washes available, you can invest in more than one pair (as Barber did—she has three!) and wear them with every outfit, from date night (pair a darker shade with kitten heels and a going-out top) to a casual day of errands.

The denim is thinner than other pairs in her closet, though the less rigid look and feel make this pair feel closer to lounge pants with every wash. After several years of owning the Baggy Dad Jeans, Barber says each pair is softer than ever.

What We Like
  • Cuffed hems are bold and refined

  • True to size

  • Darker wash feels more formal

What to Consider
  • A tad long for flat shoes for petite wearers

Size Range: 23-34 | Inseam: 30 inches (cuffed); 34 inches (uncuffed) | Rise: High

The traditional, relaxed shape of most baggy jeans may feel less polished than bootcut or skinny styles, yet the Cuffed Spencer Jean from Frame proves that an ultra-wide leg can look refined when the pair is intentionally designed. This Frame style has a dark wash, high-rise fit, with bold, exaggerated cuffed hems, giving it a more sophisticated feel compared to other baggy jeans on this list.

Despite being petite, Barber found this style perfectly true-to-size on the hips and ideal for pairing with her favorite pairs of heeled leather boots—though she recommends avoiding flat shoes unless you want a really baggy look at the ankles.

Maddie Barber, writer: “I’ve been reaching for these Frame jeans when I want to wear something comfortable and wide-legged without looking too casual, like on date nights with my significant other or nights out to my go-to NYC cocktail bars.”

What to Look for in Baggy Jeans

  • Rise: Choosing between high-, mid-, or low-rise baggy jeans is ultimately up to personal preference, though each style can create a different vibe for the outfit you’re putting together. Mid-rise baggy jeans are the most versatile and ideal for everyday looks, as they don’t offer additional structure (like high-rise) or are limited in structure (like low-rise). High-rise baggy jeans work well with more elevated outfits, as the contrast between the leg and waist proportions can make the bagginess look like an intentional design choice, rather than just a way to feel more comfortable. Low-rise baggy jeans tend to look ultra-relaxed and casual, but look especially cool and chic paired with unexpected shoes, like pointed-toe heeled boots or bold sneakers.
  • Inseam Length: Consider your height when shopping for baggy jeans. The inseam length that looks perfect on a petite person will likely be too short for a tall person with long legs (and vice versa), reducing the bagginess of the denim. If you’re on the shorter side, around 30 inches is an ideal inseam length, whereas a 34-inch inseam is better for anyone tall.

How We Tested Baggy Jeans

Byrdie editors and writers used baggy jeans from their own wardrobes and sought out and tested top-rated, trending styles and brands to determine which pairs deliver on versatility, size inclusivity, comfort, and style.

FAQ
  • How do I style baggy jeans?

If you’re unsure how to style baggy jeans, Chicago-based stylist Lauren Sharkey says, “Don’t overthink it! Denim is the most versatile player in any wardrobe,” noting that a baggier silhouette is meant to elevate your typical outfits, not overcomplicate them. “Bring them to the office with a light blue button-down, charcoal blazer, sweater around the waist, and a ballet flat. Wear them to drinks with a sheer blouse, bralette, and slingback heel. They can work for dinner with the in-laws in a cardigan and loafers. It’s hard to mess it up, I promise.”

She also suggests playing around in your own closet to find what works with your baggy denim. “Can you identify three to four tops that work? How about finding a chunky sweater that hits right at the waist? Workshop the entire outfit, and you’ll be more likely to actually grab and wear it!”

  • How should baggy jeans fit at the waist?

“The fit of a loose denim is exactly what (quickly) separates sloppy from effortless. There’s a difference between being strategically roomy and just too big,” says Sharkey. The right waist fit and inseam length are key—Sharkey explains that “baggy jeans means fitted at the waist (most often, a low waist!) with the volume proceeding down the leg from there. Baggy denim shouldn’t require a belt to stay up. Fitted at the waist, roomy down the leg!”

  • What shoes look best with them?

Sharkey suggests pairing baggy denim with a slim shoe, such as a flat, a loafer, or a slender elevated sneaker. “I love the juxtaposition that ballet flats bring to the street style fit of the denim. I love a flip-flop when the weather allows. You can also pair with a slender boot, but not a round toe, as it brings the leg to an immediate halt. An elongated toe works together with denim to elongate the bottom half of the body,” she details.

Why Trust Byrdie

Maddie Barber is a Byrdie style and beauty writer and shopping expert. She spends most of her week wearing jeans (often baggy jeans) and is very picky about the styles she keeps in her wardrobe, so any pair she recommends has gone through several weeks of testing in every setting, from nights out to casual Saturdays running errands around NYC. For this story, she not only detailed her go-to pairs of baggy jeans but also drew on insights from other Byrdie editors based on their personal experiences with baggy jeans in their wardrobes.
