His first car was a 1976 Vauxhall Viva, followed swiftly by a 1976 Mk2 Ford Escort. The reason for the quick turnaround was that the Viva was very temperamental and would throw major tantrums, refusing to start for no reason whatsoever. When it did start, it had a top speed of 36mph. The great thing about having old cars early in your driving career is that they give you the opportunity to learn so much about them (by that he means you have to carry out frequent repairs), but it does help you understand and be more aware of how vehicles work, which in turn makes you a much more sympathetic driver.u00A0nnnnDriving has also been a major interest. He passed the Institute of Advanced Motorists (now IAM Roadsmart) advanced driving test, took various driver improvement courses, including front and rear wheel drive skid control and performance driving. His interest in larger vehicles led him to sit his PCV test and work as a bus driver for a time.u00A0u00A0nnnnWith CAR and Parkers, Alex focuses on tools and power washers. He recognised fairly early on that having decent tools is an absolute must. Thereu2019s nothing worse than having a screwdriver or spanner slip, damaging the fixing and no doubt giving you a scuffed knuckle into the bargain. Itu2019s a similar story with power tools; you donu2019t want to be left unable to complete a job because the battery doesnu2019t last as long as expected. Power washers appeal to the (sometimes deeply hidden) clean geek side of his character. There is something deeply satisfying about watching dirt and stains being vanquished by strong water.u00A0u00A0nnnnIn his spare time, he enjoys a bit of therapeutic gardening and is always deeply surprised, yet quietly pleased, when any of the flowers or vegetables he plants actually grow. As Honda continues to progress towards a more EV and PHEV-focused lineup, it’s introducing a new logo to represent the shift in priorities. It’s the first logo change since 2000,
At first glance, it looks like the same H we’ve always known, but if you look more closely, it is subtly different. Honda describes the design as representing ‘two outstretched hands’, a visual metaphor for its desire to expand the possibilities of mobility and better serve people around the world. The badge is closer in spirit to the 1961 original, looking more open and a little less aggressive, which is perhaps more suitable in pursuit of achieving a zero-emission calm.
The timing matters too. From 2027, Honda will be embarking on its next phase of electrification, with new EV and major hybrid models forming the backbone of its lineup. The updated H mark will serve as a visual marker for them, subtly distinguishing them from Honda’s current lineup while avoiding a full reset. It’s brand continuity with a three-pin plug attached.
Honda has updated its badge several times since the 1960s, but never in a way to ruffle any feathers. The original H was slimmer and more delicate; later versions became bolder and more rectangular as Honda grew into a global powerhouse. This latest version feels like another reflection of its time: less about power and profitability, more about collaboration, intelligence and efficiency. You might not notice it straight away, and that’s probably the point.
Expect to see the new logo popping up gradually. First on new electric and hybrid models, then across showrooms, communications and motorsport programmes. Honda isn’t rushing into things here, rolling the badge out as its future products arrive rather than slapping it onto everything overnight.
