‘Fallout’ fans “betrayed” after mysterious countdown led to “crummy” BTS photos

Following the launch of Fallout season two at the end of last year, fans discovered a dedicated BTS website that also contained a mysterious countdown. Coinciding with the season two finale, fans were hoping that the countdown would end with official news about rumoured remakes of classic games Fallout 3 and Fallout: New Vegas.

Both projects were revealed in a 2022 leak and speculation has ramped up in recent weeks with backend changes being made to the game’s Steam pages and a new advert featuring Fallout star Aaron Moten playing classic games.

Last year, Fallout boss Todd Howard promised the team were hard at work on “that thing you want” and in April, the studio shadow-dropped a remastered version of The Elder Scrolls: Oblivion. “It worked out well,” said Howard. “I like to just announce stuff and release it.

However it turns out the countdown only revealed a BTS look at The Penthouse, a location from the final episodes of Fallout season two.

“I know we all knew the countdown would be TV show related but I’m so sick to death of Bethesda using this tactic to bait Fallout fans. They know everyone wants news about the remaster or a new game. They have done this shit for years and all they ever do is let everyone down. They are the market leaders in disappointment. It’s a dogshit tactic,” wrote one fan on X.

“Not having a new game (or a remaster) ready twice in a row after all this press they got from the show is….interesting. I wanna give them money to play Fallout. They just don’t seem to care,” said another.

“All that for a crummy commercial,” wrote one fan on Reddit. “I fucking love and hate being a Fallout fan,” said another. “It really would have been a great time to at least announce something,” said a third.

While work on Fallout season three is set to begin later this year so fans can see new episodes as soon as possible, gamers have more of a wait on their hands. Fallout 5 won’t launch until after The Elder Scrolls 6, which is rumoured to release in 2028.

In other news, Grand Theft Auto publishers Take-Two have confirmed the release details for Grand Theft Auto 6.
