The first season of The Last Of Us launched in 2023, recreating the first game in the best-selling video game series for television. A second season followed in 2025 and adapted some of The Last Of Us Part Two.
Showrunner Craig Mazin said the show could run anywhere between three and five seasons “but four seems like a good number”. After the end of season two, Mazin said there was “no way to complete this narrative” with just one more season. “Hopefully, we’ll earn our keep enough to come back and finish it in a fourth. That’s the most likely outcome.”
However, when asked by Deadline if the The Last Of Us season three would be the final season over the weekend, HBO CEO Casey Bloys said “it certainly seems that way.”
“But on decisions like that, we will defer to the showrunners. So you can ask them,” they added.
“[The Last Of Us season three] is definitely planned for 2027,” Bloys told Variety last year. “Craig is still working it out whether it will be two more seasons or one more long season. It hasn’t been decided yet.”

After a hugely successful first season, viewership of the season two finale was down 56 per cent compared to season one and there was tension between long-term fans of the game and newcomers to the series over several plot points.
Responding to the backlash, Bella Ramsey said: “People are of course entitled to their opinions. But it doesn’t affect the show, it doesn’t affect how the show continues or anything in any way. They’re very separate things to me. So no, I just don’t really engage.”
“You don’t have to watch it. If you hate it that much, the game exists. You can just play the game again,” they added. “If you do want to watch it, I hope you enjoy it.”
The Last Of Us co-creator Neil Druckmann recently announced he would be stepping away as co-showrunner on the HBO adaptation to focus on making more games while fellow Naughty Dog employee Halley Gross (who worked as a writer and producer on the TV show) also confirmed she’d be leaving the project, leaving Mazin with total creative control over the future of The Last Of Us.
In other news, Google has started letting people try out its new AI tool Genie, with rip-offs of The Legend Of Zelda, Mario and Grand Theft Auto already appearing online.
