Prince Of Persia: The Sands Of Time was released in 2003 and rebooted the franchise after 1999’s Prince Of Persia 3D. The game went on to sell more than 14million copies and inspired a number of sequels as well as a badly-received Hollywood adaptation.

A remake of The Sands Of Time was first announced in 2020 with a planned 2021 release date. However after several delays and a complete change in management, last month it was confirmed that the remake had been scrapped.

“While the project had real potential, we weren’t able to reach the level of quality you deserve and continuing would have required more time and investment than we could responsibly commit,” said a statement from Ubisoft. “We didn’t want to release something that fell short of what The Sands Of Time represents.”

Following the news, fans have launched a campaign to save the game.

Prince Of Persia: The Sands Of Time is not just a game. It’s a landmark for Ubisoft and the video game industry,” explains a petition. “We know that the development of the remake faced real problems: criticism, delays, a complete restart of the project, and internal changes at Ubisoft. Still, years of work, creative investment and developer dedication cannot simply end in silence.”

“This petition has a clear and direct request: We want Ubisoft to resume the project, finalise development, and release Prince Of Persia: The Sands Of Time Remake. We recognize that this decision is not simple but we also believe that historic franchises should not be abandoned when there is still demand, passion, and cultural value.”

After going live on Saturday (January 31), more than 6500 fans have signed the petition. You can check it out here.

The Sands Of Time remake is one of several projects Ubisoft has scrapped, with four unannounced games also cancelled as part of a “major reset” at the studio. The games reportedly did not meet “the new enhanced quality [and] more selective portfolio prioritisation criteria”.

In other news, HBO boss Casey Bloys has said the upcoming third season of The Last Of Us “certainly seems” to be last.
