The “Barely Theres”
Warm, Deep Red

This time of year isn’t famous for its diverse color palette, but it should be. A true winter’s wardrobe is full of crisp, bright shades (think cobalt, fuchsia, royal purple, and ruby red), and a not-officially-color-analyzed-true-winter-lover’s nail polish shade selections—even if they prefer a neutral!—are similarly varied.
Listen, ice princesses: There are more shades of white out there than you realize! Anyone who has seen snow fall, shine in the sun, then melt knows this well. There are lots of grays out there, too. And don’t get me started on burgundy/cranberry/deep berry/merlot. What a world.
“The winter season brings me back to classics,” world champion nail artist, beauty judge, and educator Valeriia Telemaniuk tells Byrdie. This means we’ll be seeing a lot of Frenchies (of course), shades of gray, blue tones, and of course all those deep reds—in both bold and muted varietals—for the next few months. Keep reading to discover this winter’s trending nail trending colors as predicted by nail pros, and shop the shades yourself.
Chocolate Ganache

@s.ova.nails/Instagram
Have you heard of Brownie Pudding nails? You will this winter. Or rather: ganache nails.
Nail artist and educator Sofiia Mazur describes the color as a rich brown shade that looks like melted dark chocolate. Think Red Iguana’s Ganache gel or Dazzle Dry’s Fringe.
“It feels luxurious and warm, perfect for cooler seasons or anyone drawn to understated elegance!” she says. “On nails, ganache adds quiet confidence—sophisticated yet inviting! It pairs beautifully with gold jewelry, soft neutrals, or even minimalist black, making it timeless.”

Muted Berry

@themaniclub/Instagram
“Many clients are gravitating towards deeper, grounding tones: espresso browns, soft mauves, and muted berries,” says Juanita Huber-Millet, founder and creative director of Townhouse Salons. “These offer a sense of warmth and sophistication while still feeling understated enough.”
Product Picks
Light Ocean Blue

sundays studio
Nail pro Amy Ling Lin says light ocean blue is another one to watch. Specifically light ocean blue with a pearl finish.
The founder and CEO of Sundays Studio calls the shade “calm, luminous, and uplifting,” noting that these soft, airy blues like Sundays Studio’s L09 offer a “refreshing contrast to winter’s darker palette.”
“This light ocean blue, finished with a delicate pearlescent sheen, reflects light beautifully and adds a subtle glow to the nails,” she adds. “It carries a sense of positive energy, soothing, calming, and quietly joyful at the same time. The pearl finish brings dimension and softness, and a sense of clarity.”

Cool Gray

@lolo.nailedit/Instagram
According to OPI Global Ambassador Coca Michelle, cool gray is going to be everyone’s favorite neutral this winter.
“It’s a chic and sophisticated neutral that compliments winter styles beautifully. “This shade will really make your jewelry stand out if you like to mix your metals!” she explains, adding that some of her favorite shades to use are OPI’s Peace of Mined, Case of Glamnesia, and Suzi Talks with Her Hands.
Product Picks
Deep Navy

@melanated.mani/Instagram
Michelle describes deep navy as a “perfect post-holiday reset color.”
“It feels calming but also transitions nicely from winter into the New Year. It’s also easy to wear. Whether you’re heading to a party or wearing it day-to-day at work, it’s a classic.”
As for her polish recommendations? “I like OPI Nail Lacquer in Less is Norse, OPI Nail Lacquer in Havin’ a Candy Ol’ Time and OPI Nail Lacquer in Suzi & the Arctic Fox,” she explains.

The “Barely Theres”

@townhouse/Instagram
“Winter always brings a return to clarity and calm, to fresh beginnings, and we’re seeing that reflected in nail color. Subtle milky tones, soft neutrals, and cool, barely-there pastels are trending,” says Huber-Millet. “Shades like Coconut Milk, Glazed Marshmallow, and Milkshake from Townhouse’s Flawless Collection feel clean and restorative, the perfect reset after the richness of Autumn.”
If you go for a pinky neutral, Mazur and Telemaniuk both recommend adding French tips.
“The French manicure is that rare trend that never leaves. It has always been and always will be in style,” notes Telemaniuk. “It’s clean, chic, effortless, and works for absolutely everything. For January, we’ll be seeing both the traditional crisp white-tip French and soft modern variations, but the message is the same. It’s the one look that truly ‘was, is, and always will be.’”

Warm, Deep Red

@iramshelton/Instagram
Another winter essential, according to Ling Lin, is a warm, deep red tone like her brand’s No.17. She describes these colors as “warm, chic, and quietly powerful.”
“This shade instantly warms up the colder months, bringing a sense of coziness while still feeling polished and festive,” adds the expert. “It’s the kind of color that transitions effortlessly from everyday elegance to holiday moments—sophisticated without feeling heavy.”
Product Picks
Earthy Metallics

Death Valley Nails
Mazur also thinks we’ll be seeing a lot of earthy and organic metallics. Though they’re similarly shimmery, they’re far removed from December’s festive holiday nail looks.
“Think bronze like Mineral Fusion Rose All Day or clay gold and olive chrome like Mineral Fusion Gold Rush, often layered with matte or stone-textured finishes,” she explains. “These tones reflect light softly, like sun on sand or minerals, giving nails a sophisticated, lived-in glow that looks expensive without trying.”
Outside the polish world, similar natural-toned metals have been spotted.
“Balmain’s fall collection featured earthy metallic tones that matched the nails to the fabric,” the artist adds. “It caught my eye because it’s so glowing, but never loud. The earthy metallic tone can be done as a full nail or an accent shade.”
Product Picks
Black Cherry

@s.ova.nails/Instagram
Cherry girl winter is here again.
“This color has an understated drama to it: dark enough to evoke mystery, yet with a touch of red warmth that keeps it wearable and elegant,” says Mazur. “Fashion icons and celebrities like Jennifer Lopez and Kate Moss have long favored black cherry tones for their versatility. It pairs as beautifully with evening gowns as it does with a casual oversized blazer or vintage denim. In nail trends, it’s become a cold-season staple that never goes out of style.”
Product Picks
Crisp White

@altera_nails_sandiego/Instagram
Ever heard of Cloud Dancer?? Telemaniuk has. But she saw the rise of crisp white polishes for winter coming before Pantone made their big announcement.
“Another major shade is pure, classic white like Mineral Fusion Ice Breaker. White is having a real moment this season especially with the Pantone shade of Cloud Dancer just being announced,” she explains. “Think of it as the winter-fresh take on minimalism such as snowy landscapes, cozy knits, and cool, frosty mornings distilled into one hue. White isn’t just a summer favorite anymore it’s becoming one of the most in-demand colors for a crisp, modern winter aesthetic.”
Product Picks
Gray-Lavender

@themaniclub/Instagram
As promised: more gray. Telemaniuk is all about a winter gray, from soft, light versions to pearly finishes, deep charcoals, and my personal favorite: gray-lavender.
“These colors feel especially relevant in winter because the daylight hours become shorter and the overall atmosphere naturally shifts into cooler, muted tones,” the artist says. “Clients often gravitate toward grays during the winter season because they reflect the winter mood while still looking incredibly elegant and sophisticated. Grey is versatile, minimal, and chic—a perfect match for colder months.”
