When I was little, my mom took me to a performance of The Nutcracker and at intermission I sobbed because, though I thought it was probably my turn to take the stage with Clara, it absolutely wasn’t. It turned out there was no such thing as “my turn.” Devastating.

Despite the strongest desire to hop up on stage, I didn’t become a ballerina (not yet, anyway!!). However, I did vow to never feel left out when it comes to stage makeup again. Fellow audience members longing to be part of production: I promise you’ll feel so much more included when outfitted with “Sugarplum Glam,” this season’s shimmeriest and sweetest makeup trend.

About Sugarplum Glam

Sugarplum Glam is a makeup style that celebrates winter frostiness and sweetly juicy, light pink tones. There’s an element of Whoville Whobilation to it, plus a touch of ’60s pink-tinseled tree pizzazz. It’s a look Sally Draper would wear to the SCDP Christmas party (she borrowed Megan’s makeup) and feel thrilled when Joan complimented it.

Her dad wouldn’t approve, and that—among other things—would be his problem.

Though it does favor more dramaticapproaches to winter makeup with all that frostiness, Sugarplum Glam can fit into anyone’s routine. You can make it happen with a simple blush update, or work the soft tones in with a shimmery eyeshadow.

The lips are my personal favorite place to explore the trend. There are so many great frosted lipsticks on the market, as well as glosses and balms packed full of glitter pigment.

The Trend

We started seeing Sugarplum Glam pop up more last holiday season. Remember Sabrina Carpenter’s “A Nonsense Christmas” special? That girlie was sugarplum-d to the max. TikTok vintage Christmas moodboard videos only added to its popularity. And Glinda, of course.

It’s also been a big year for ethereal girls, and anyone who knows their Tchaikovsky knows that fairies and sugarplum go hand in hand.

In Hollywood, stars like Chase Infiniti and Tyla have been choosing Sugar Plum glam regularly. We also saw it boom after this year’s Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show, which really celebrated glitter and soft pink tones.

MAC has been ruling the Sugarplum Glam landscape recently.

“Pepto pinks are overdue for a major comeback. Channel a bit of ’90s beach babe by teaming up Dazzlelips Crayon in Spaced Out with Stone Lip Pencil,” explained makeup artist Terry Barber in an Instagram post by the brand showcasing a “bubblegum beige” Sugarplum Glam lip look.

As mentioned, you can go so many ways with the style… but this lip combo is a great place to start. Just don’t forget to get your beauty sleep before going in with the shimmer. Dreamtime visions of sugarplums are just as important to the look as the final physical sugarplum vision, and we can tell when your subconscious isn’t into it.
