Auburn is “warm, multi-tonal, and looks great with natural hair colors,” says Kessie-Cudjoe. “I recommend it to those who want to elevate their color without too much vibrance.” Plus, if you have thinner hair, it can give you a bit of a visual boost: “It gives hair depth, which makes braids look fuller,” she says.
Nolan notes that the warm brown and red tones of this shade are reminiscent of autumn leaves. “It’s a color that can give anyone a healthy, radiant glow and is a great way to transition from lighter shades into something deeper and cozier just in time for fall,” she adds.
Honey Blonde

Honey blonde braiding hair is quite popular, and Kessie-Cudjoe tells Byrdie that it’s the perfect color for fall thanks to its soft golden tones. “It enhances blonde highlights perfectly, providing a subtle pop,” she explains. “It’s the perfect color for anyone who wants something bright and looks good with box braids and knotless braids.” Nolan is also a fan, adding that this shade is “soft, natural, and still makes a statement.”
Looking to create a honey blonde blend? There’s something particularly striking about the combination of colors #33 (auburn) and #30 (chestnut), especially when colors #27 (warm blonde) and #613 (platinum) are also thrown into the mix.
Burgundy

If you prefer to stick with one braiding color for fall and are looking to make a statement, burgundy might be a good choice. “Burgundy braiding hair gives off a rich, versatile vibe that looks great on everyone,” Kessie-Cudjoe says. Although burgundy is a bold color, it can still add warmth to any braided style. Color 4V is a go-to shade, combining elegance and edge.
If you don’t want to make a full commitment to the color, you can always blend it with black braiding hair for a bit of contrast, or opt for ombré braiding hair instead.
“The styles that work really well with [burgundy] braiding hair are knotless braids, tribal braids, and passion twists,” Kessie-Cudjoe adds.
Chestnut

Chestnut is one of the ultimate hair colors for fall. Not only is it seasonally appropriate, but its rich, warm tones provide a natural, relaxed vibe. “It’s an incredibly versatile color which adds the right amount of dimension and shine without looking flat,” says Nolan. “Also, if you have light brown hair, it can blend seamlessly with growth, so you can enjoy the style without having to worry about getting a braid refresh.”
Kessie-Cudjoe recommends blending chestnut braiding hair with copper braiding hair. “It provides a gentle yet shiny contrast all at once, making it perfect for anyone who wants to intensify brown tones without as much contrast,” she explains.
Copper

The rich orange-red tones of copper make it a great choice for fall. “It’s a warm and vibrant shade that instantly brightens the face, enhancing golden and red undertones,” Nolan says. Copper has a lot of depth, so it will stand out with any braided style you try. “It looks great with small box braids or knotless braids, so if you’re looking for something more seasonal, copper will deliver a look that you’ll love,” she adds.
Dark Brown/Black

Dark brown or black braids are timeless, no matter the season. “Slightly softer than jet black, dark brown or black braiding hair is elegant, versatile, and provides a seamless, natural look,” Nolan says. Along with being the ideal neutral for those who prefer a more classic look, color #1B also works well blended with other colors to create a more natural aesthetic. “It’s a go-to for chic, long-lasting braids that offer a refined vibe,” Nolan adds.
Plum

Another bold color for anyone looking to add some personality to their braids, Kessie-Cudjoe says plum is perfect for fall because it’s bold, edgy, and guaranteed to turn heads. “The purple undertones in plum braiding hair bring light into the atmosphere, especially under natural sunlight,” she explains. “It stands out on almost all skin tones and looks great with box braids and Fulani braids.”
