There isn’t a rulebook when it comes to haircuts—we should all feel free to wear our hair exactly how we want. However, a great haircut will always highlight your features. When you have a round face, that means opting for a chop that draws on your natural symmetry. One of the best ways to do that? With bangs, according to stylists.

Considering there are many trending styles to choose from—curtained, choppy, blunt, baby—it’s important to lean into looks that suit your needs.

“Longer curtain bangs or shaggy Bardot bangs, for example, complement round faces,” hairstylist and R+Co collective member Marwa Bashir explains. “Layers around the cheekbones [can also] help accentuate high points and bone structure in the face.”

Whether you’re looking for a feathery fringe or some low-commitment curtains, these 22 examples of bangs for round faces will help get you started.

Multi-Length Bangs

Zendaya has yet to steer us wrong with hair-spiration, and these choppy bangs are no exception. They have the same effect as your traditional blunt bangs, but the multi-length pieces add an element of dimension you wouldn’t typically get with a straight-across cut.

Bangs don’t have to be a major change to your overall look. Take a page from Priyanka Chopra Jonas’ book and keep them almost as long as the rest of your strands, using a round brush or curling iron to sculpt them into face-framing sections.

Mushroom Bangs

A modernized take on the good, old-fashioned mushroom cut, Michelle Williams’ angled, wispy bangs blend beautifully with the rest of her shortened style. The subtle side part elevates the look.

Emma Stone’s short hair makes her side bang look even more subtle. But the fringe is definitely there! And gorgeous, we might add.

Micro Bangs

Micro bangs may not be for everyone—they require a drastic chop and quite a bit of maintenance—but Alexa Demi shows just how gorgeous they can look on a round face.

Short Wispy Bangs

Gemma Chan’s choppy fringe is an ultra-cool twist on traditional straight-across bangs, featuring pieces at slightly different lengths. Though this look was created using (surprise!) a clip-in piece, the undone texture looks like it could have been created using Chan’s natural waves.

Straight-Across Bangs

Straight-across bangs aren’t an obvious first choice for round face shapes (according to stylists, they tend to look best on oblong faces), but Selena Gomez makes them work by leaning into her natural texture, which lends itself to a more feathered look. This prevents them from looking too heavy on top, which can mess with the overall dimensionality of the cut.

Curtain Bangs

Curtain bangs are a stylist favorite for round faces. With so many styles to choose from, you really can’t go wrong. Isla Fisher’s face-framing layers can be easily duplicated with a blowdryer and round brush.

Square Bangs

Bashir cautions against super-square, wide bangs for round faces as they can “draw the eye to the widest part of the head.” To keep the face balanced, opt for a lengthened take on the blunt bang that extends past your brow bone, like Chrissy Teigen showcases here.

Curly Bangs

There’s really no wrong way to embrace curly bangs. One important pro tip to remember: Because shrinkage is real, have your stylist cut your bangs on dry hair so they don’t wind up shorter than you want.

Long Wispy Bangs

As mentioned, wispy bangs are an excellent option for anyone with a round face looking to experiment with a straight-across style; they’re easy to manage and don’t add much weight to your look. The piecey look, as shown by Olivia Munn, is traditionally cut with a razor and will grow out seamlessly.

Balanced Bangs

Mandy Moore’s Audrey Hepburn-inspired bangs are blunt and soft at the same time thanks to their feathered texture. They also blend seamlessly into the long layers around her face.

Viola Davis’s side-swept bangs provide even more proof that curly bangs are perfect for round faces.

Baby Bangs

Baby bangs hit closer to the hairline than most other traditional styles. Ginnifer Goodwin shows us how it’s done with these ruffled pieces that dust above her browline.

Low-Commitment Curtain Bangs

Cameron Diaz’s low-commitment curtain bangs create a stunning frame for her face. The deep side part creates an asymmetrical look, but this type of cut can be styled in many different ways (down the middle, tucked behind your ears, or pulled back).

Shaggy Bangs

Shaggy bangs are shorter in the center and graduate into longer pieces at the sides. They are a great option for creating a frame around round face shapes. Cara Delevingne’s platinum, roughed-up take on the look may be straight out of the ’80s, but it feels right at home in 2024.

Sharp Bangs

“A rounded face works well with a sharp-line bang that’s straight across at the sides to sculpt the face,” celebrity hairstylist Rebekah Forecast at Serge Normant at John Frieda Salon previously told Byrdie. Penelope Cruz takes that straight-line style to the next level by turning it into a “bottleneck” look with longer pieces on the sides.

Choppy Bangs

To steal Gabrielle Union’s straight, side-swept bangs, Bashir recommends blow-drying your front pieces with a paddle boar bristle brush and “using a back and forth wrapping motion to help the bangs lay naturally.”

Side-Swept Bangs

Side-swept bangs create more length, which can help balance out round face shapes. Copy Queen Latifah’s cascading take with a quick once-over with your curling iron (ideally a 1.25-inch barrel), and pin up the section to let it set.

Face-Framing Bangs

Drew Barrymore provides a perfect example of Bashir’s recommended “long layers around the cheekbones” with this undone updo. The effortless, pulled-back waves put her artful layers—and subtle bangs—on full display.

Barely-There Bangs

These barely-there bangs are perfect for anyone looking to experiment with fringe. They work great with thin textures and can be easily styled with a blow dryer, round brush, and creaseless clips. “[These clips] can shape [your bangs] into place as they cool down and will help the bangs stay where you want—especially if you have any cowlicks,” Bashir says.
