A lived-in bronde allows light and dark tones to melt together for soft dimension, McAuley explains. And that seamless color blend can be tailored to any individual routine. “This color creates visual interest through depth and brightness that still feels natural. It’s ideal for fall when we crave deeper tones but still want some of that brightness through the ends.”

‘Tis the season to get back to your roots and embrace those earthy blonde base colors. Let go of those heavy summer highlights and go for an au natural mushroom blonde. Low-maintenance color visits are a wonderful way to cue up hibernation season, and opting for a more holographic glaze will carry you well into winter.

The key to choosing a fall hair color, no matter how moody or bright, is to make sure the color has a rich, organic feel. “This sun-washed, sandy blonde captures the natural essence of an organic blonde color, and makes clients look as their hair once did when they were toddlers,” explains Rotenberg. “Maintaining a brighter tone with Davines Alchemic Shampoo is recommended to uphold vibrancy between salon visits.”

As the days get darker earlier, it’s easy to understand the craving for a darker, more concentrated brunette hue. “The richness of espresso brunette is that it’s very reflective, allowing light to bounce off for a glowing finish,” says Rotenberg. A great choice for colder months, this shade was made for a soft and cozy vibe.

“Copper tones can be so dynamic,” says Hallquist. “It is one of the most requested colors I get from new clients wanting to make a change in the fall and winter hair season. I think of fairy tale bronze as having both warm and golden tones, complementing a rich coppery-red shade.”

“A deep chestnut brunette stays mostly one solid shade, yet gleams with healthy shine,” McAuley explains. “As the air becomes drier, this color keeps hair looking hydrated and luxurious with very little upkeep.”

If you already have highlights and are looking to give them a seasonal twist, maple blonde is the hue for you. “This is a blonde that can be achieved with highlights and is loaded with caramel and toffee tones,” says Hallquist. “It’s a harmonious balance of cool and warm, and it looks amazing on warmer skin undertones, like olive.”

When the sun isn’t out as much, we need to find other ways to maintain our warmth, and this hot chocolate hair color needs to be high up on our lists. Whether you incorporate that milky warmth at the ends or weave it into a full highlight or single process color, “keeping some warmth to a rich dark brown will prevent the hair from registering as flat against olive skin tones,” says Rotenberg.

“A vintage butter blonde is one of my personal fall faves,” says Hallquist. “It’s an all-over blonde tone that has creamy, yellow undertones, but doesn’t dare register as brassy or too warm.” Rotenberg agrees that when the months get colder, she loves to transform her clients into something warmer to help them feel illuminated.

Obsidian brunette is all about leaning into the moody vibes of the season. “This is a dark brunette with icy and smoky tonality,” explains Hallquist. “It creates a great balance for those with pink undertones in their complexion.”

A rusted copper hue is a sophisticated tint come fall because it incorporates all those beloved seasonal tones. “It reflects beautifully in cooler light, adding warmth to the overall look,” says McAuley. Copper rust is a great color to blend in “for enhancing brunettes who want a noticeable transformation.”

McAuley loves to see a softer tone-on-tone blonde this time of year. “Lighter and deeper pieces blend effortlessly with minimal contrast, giving that end-of-summer blonde a more refined, fall-ready feel,” she explains of the trend. “Slightly warmer, more neutral tones will keep the blonde feeling cozy without going dark.”
