14 Frosted Eyeshadow Looks That Have an Ethereal Y2K Vibe

Any beauty lover alive in the late ’90s and early 2000s knows the vice-like grip frosted eyeshadow had on us all. The early aughts had us all leaning hard into those sparkly, cool-toned shades (celebs like Britney Spears, Paris Hilton, and Christina Milian often sported the look). Now, the shimmery eye look is back in style once again.

Frosted eyeshadow is the latest Y2K beauty trend to get the revival treatment. And like those that have come before it, the frosted eye is getting a decidedly modern day twist. With today’s take, the icy look doesn’t just come in baby blue or silver hues. We’re seeing frosted eyes in every color on our feed and the red carpet. Ahead, we rounded up our 14 favorite frosted eye shadow looks. See them all below.

Sheer Silver

Yara Shahidi’s glam is a great example of dipping your toe in the frosted eyeshadow trend without going super bold. Start by laying down a nude color all over the lid before smoking out a neutral or warm brown tone in the crease. Then, lightly dust an icy silver-white like the Colourpop Super Shock Shadow in Tassel on the center of the lid. Without adding any extra product, lightly buff the edges of the shimmer shade with the brush you used for the crease.

Pair a subtle shimmer shadow with a smudged-out liner for a more modern take on the frosted lid trend. Stick to a neutral-toned shade like the Charlotte Tilbury Eyes to Mesmerize Cream Shadow in Oyster Pearl. Apply a creamy black pencil liner along the lash line and waterline before buffing out for a more lived-in look. Balance your look with neutral, softly blushed skin and a matte red lip.

Violet Eyes

A bronzy purple eye has an intergalactic feel. You can achieve a similar effect using the Too Faced Maple Syrup Pancakes Eyeshadow Palette or the Urban Decay Naked Metal Mania Metallic Eyeshadow Palette. After running a nude color all over the lid, use a matte dark brown to define the crease and create a winged outer corner. Then, apply a metallic orange-tan color to the inner third of the eye and a medium shimmer brown along the outer third. Finally, use your finger to gently tap a violet shade through the center and lightly blend.

Finger-Painted Frost

The best thing about a frosted-eye moment is that it requires little technical skill. In fact, the messier, the better, as demonstrated by Dua Lipa’s icy khaki shadow. For the easiest application, opt for a liquid shadow like the Armani Beauty Eye Tint Liquid Eyeshadow in 9S Cold Copper. Deposit some of the product on the lid using the applicator before smudging it with your finger.

A 2020s Twist

Hailey Bieber’s dewy skin screams the 2020s, while her icy, almost-wet eye gives serious Y2K vibes. To copy Bieber’s glossy eye, use a sheer soft baby pink hue with silver flecks—the silver is key to getting that dimensional look. We love the Urban Decay 24/7 Moondust Eyeshadow in Rebel Star. For a true wet look, top with the Makeup by Mario Master Secret Glow Highlighter.

Green With Envy

To ground a bold hue like this radiant green, pair with deep matte browns in the crease and outer corners. Something like the Nabla Secret Palette will have everything you need and more. For the green shade, we’d suggest the NYX Ultimate Glow Shots Liquid Eyeshadow in Kiwi Killa.

Barbiecore is no longer just a trend; it’s here to stay. Why not take the hue to the next level with a frosted edge? Sunlit Seduction from Pat McGrath Labs’ Mothership XI Eyeshadow Palette was practically made for this look.

For those with hooded lids, it can feel difficult to replicate certain eyeshadow trends. But by focusing the shimmery shadow on the upper lid and high points of the brow bone, you can create a show-stopping frosted look that packs a serious punch.

DIY Duo-Chrome

Create a duo-chrome effect using several metallic shadows in the same color family—like this genius mix of blues and purples. To recreate, use the Half Magic Glitterpill Eye Paint + Eyeliner in Merquoise, Neptune Daddy, and Sweet Prince to create an almost tie-dye effect with serious sparkle.

We love this softer take on a frosted lid. The key is using a cool-toned liquid shadow with a shimmery finish like the Essence Luminous Eye Tint Liquid Shadow in Sparkly Jade.

Lavender Haze

Opt for paler pastel hues like pink and purple for a more ethereal take on the trend. To create that shimmering base, use a plummy rose like the Laura Mercier Caviar Stick in Rose Thorn or Kulfi Beauty Eyeshadow in Sitara Sparkles.

Cool Blues

On the flip side, you can create a more edgy look with a multi-shade blue eye. Start with an array of blue eyeshadow shades, like those found in the J.Cat Beauty Dia & Noche Tri-Element Palette, to build the base and create the halo-like eye effect. For an extra pop, top the center of the lid with a semi-translucent glitter topper like the Stila Glitter & Glow Liquid Eye Shadow in Perlina.

Icy Chill

The beauty of frosted eyeshadow is that it can be as intricate or as simple as you like. For a low-effort look that still packs a punch, use an ultra-fine shimmering powder in stark silver. We’re big fans of the Make Up Forever Star Lit Powder in Silver. Use a flat shadow brush to pack on the color before lightly buffing out the edges with a clean blending brush.

All Smoked Out

We love everything about this smoked-out silver eye and cherry red lip combo. To make that silver eye pop, use a sheer wash of white shadow as a base before topping with a true silver like the Danessa Myricks Colorfix Liquid Metal in Platinum. From there, the key is slowly building up that smoky black shadow without muddying the shimmer.
