We’re 2 Beauty Editors Who Never Agree on Mascara, but We Both Love This Gaga-Approved Formula

Lady Gaga may be making headlines for surprise-dropping her new single and instantly iconic music video during the Grammys, but she’s captured BeautyTok’s attention for a totally different reason. Her latest Haus Labs launch, the B Structural Volumizing and Lengthening Mascara has taken the app by storm, and is beloved for its major volume and light-as-air-formula.

It’s hard for a mascara to be a one-size-fits all kind of product, but this one claims to do it all—and has the reviews to back it up, including from Lady Gaga herself. “Gaga and I sometimes bump into [this issue]: She likes something that’s really defined and subtle, a beautiful everyday lash,” Sarah Tanno, Haus Labs’ Global Artistry Director and Gaga’s personal makeup artist, tells Byrdie. “I’m someone who likes a lot of volume, but I like definition in my volume. I used to be somebody who would carry around three or four mascaras to get and achieve the lash look that I that I like. And now I have a mascara that’s kind of like a one-stop-shop that gives me all the things I need, and for every eye shape and lash type. We really wanted to push the boundaries, that this would be a mascara that works on all lash types: the thinnest, the downturned, the straight lashes, the thin lashes, the full lashes. We have something for everyone.”

In the spirit of one size fits all lashes, we had two Byrdie editors who never agree on mascara put it to the test. Read on for our honest reviews—but first, all the details.

The Formula

Like all of Haus Lab’s formulas, the B Structural mascara looks to biotech for the most innovative ingredients for optimal performance. For the brand’s first-ever mascara, the development team was inspired by haircare, and found a vegan B Silk polypeptide that’s never been used in makeup before. The B Silk wraps each lashes in a web-like, protective coat that helps to nourish, smooth and strengthen the lash. For even more strengthening power, the formula also includes rice protein to help promote lash health, and panthenol to help condition and nourish.

Tanno says that the brand always takes a two-pronged approach to product development—yes, it has to perform, but it also has to benefit your skin (or in this case, lashes). “We want it to have a beautiful, buildable, volumizing [effect], but also, what could it do for your lashes while you’re wearing it? With this mascara, it’s going to help to strengthen and fortify your lash while you’re wearing it. You’re going to have less lash fall out and build your lashes to be stronger over time.”

It was important to Tanno and the team that the mascara provided plenty of definition as well as weightless volume that stays all day. “I have very sensitive eyes that don’t like to feel weighed down by a mascara, and this one really does feel feather-light,” she explains. “Because of that, you’re able to really keep the hold and curl of your lashes—they’re not going to be weighed down throughout the day.”

Also paramount to Gaga and Tanno? It was as easy to remove as it was to apply. “Gaga wears so much makeup. She hates it when I do a lot of waterproof stuff, and it’s just terrible to take off. So this easy to put on, easy to take off. Often you get those longer wearing mascaras, and you really struggle to take them off, and that’s where a lot of your shedding happens. So this is just really soft.”

“I love a super lashy look, however, most volumizing mascara brushes just overwhelm my small eyes and sparse lashes, so I usually use several coats of more defining formulas to get the look I want. While that delivers in the volume and definition department, it usually means I’m left with crunchy, stiff lashes, which is not always the vibe. However, this mascara delivers the volume I love, while defining and separating my lashes. Most importantly, there is zero crunch to be had. My lashes look soft and fluttery, and the curl stays in place all day long. Like Gaga, I also hate taking off mascara at the end of the night, but this one is truly a dream to remove. Another slam dunk from Mother Monster!”

“I am personally not one for the no-mascara trend. I love the contrast that a little mascara brings to my light eyes—but things can go too far, too fast. I love that this formula is fluffing, lengthening, and fanning without just plastering my lashes in oily-black pigment. Just the right amount of formula grips to the wand, so there’s no clumping on the lashes or goopy, crusty buildup around the opening. It definitely feels like each lash has been defined individually, not just clumped together by the dozens. That, and this formula solves one of my biggest and longest-running mascara complaints: It doesn’t transfer onto my eyelids. Just a small dusting of powder below my brows—which Tanno recommends regardless of what mascara you’re using—kept this formula exactly where it belongs (on my lashes and nowhere else). I should also mention that there is zero flaking, a nuisance that can make my eyes extremely itchy. I actually have zero complaints? I’m floored—it’s Mayhem! Thank you, Gaga and Sarah Tanno for this dreamy, fluffy, performant formula that I’ll wear for decades to come.”

Application Tips From Lady Gaga’s Makeup Artist

“We spent a lot of time customizing the wand,” says Tanno. “On one side, you’ll see this kind of straighter point. And then you also have the hourglass, which really that helps with volume. A lot of volumizing mascaras, they have this kind of hourglass shape, but they’re usually so big that people with hooded eyes or smaller eyes just can’t wear it, and make a complete mess.”

As for application, “I like to stamp it at the base and just give it a little wiggle,” explains the makeup artist. “That way you’re coating the lash from the base, and then you just kind of turn it to get that really insane structure. And what it’s going to do is separate, coat the entire lash to make it stronger, silkier and really defined—which is nice so you can do just a couple flicks of it, or really build it up to your desired level volume, and it’s not going to get super cakey or flaky or feel heavy on your lash, which is something that we love.”

The brand wanted to make the formula as customizable as possible. “Definition was really important to Gaga,” shares Tanno, adding that the pop star likes to see every single lash. “So if you’re someone who just likes to define your lash, you just do less, and if you want a feathery effect, you just keep building. It’s for both customers—people who use a couple different mascaras will like this, because it kind of like does everything. It’s really up to you, you know how you customize it.”

Tanno assures us that Lady Gaga herself has been testing the formula for almost a year, including her entire Joker press run. So if it’s good enough for Gaga, it’s good enough for us.
