It’s officially time to dive headfirst into fall makeup. While a moody manicure shade and a pumpkin spice latte can evoke fall vibes, nothing is more exciting than refreshing your makeup routine for the season. Something as simple as dark lipstick or a matte formula can instantly evoke the feeling of autumn. Remember, you don’t have to make big changes to make a bold statement. This season, subtle washes of color and updates to classic makeup can be just as expressive.
There are lots of trends to try and no shortage of inspiring looks to recreate. To make things easy, we asked celebrity makeup artists to share 8 ways to refresh your makeup look this fall.
Meet the Experts
- Erika La’Pearl is the key makeup artist to Cardi B, based in Los Angeles, CA.
- MarQuis Ward is the lead educator for LYS Beauty and a celebrity makeup artist based in Atlanta, GA.
- Natalie Dresher is a celebrity makeup artist based in New York, NY.
- Charlie Riddle is a celebrity makeup artist with clients including Nara Smith, Maude Apatow, and more.
Go Bold With a Berry-Stained Lip
Embracing the colors of the season is an easy way to nail fall makeup. Earth tones are inherently autumnal, but rich shades of berry and wine can have the same effect when used to saturate the lips. Instead of reaching for red lipstick this season, celebrity makeup artist Erika La’Pearl recommends opting for a deep shade of berry. Changing up your lip color is an easy way to refresh your makeup, and a berry hue instantly delivers fall vibes.
The shade is also versatile, allowing you to experiment with finishes to create a variety of looks. A matte lipstick is best for a vampy finish, while high-shine formulas feel luxurious and glamorous. If you prefer something more demure, a tinted lip oil or stain is perfect for adding a light wash of color to your lips.
Reshape Your Brows
With the carefree days of summer ending, your brows are probably in need of a refresh. Fortunately, this season’s look is all about embracing a natural shape. “Fluffy, structured brows give your makeup a more defined look and frame the face to better show off your eyes,” says celebrity makeup artist, Elisa Bailon. To be clear, structured doesn’t mean sharp. According to Bailon, your brows should look styled but natural. To create the look, she recommends using a serum-infused brow gel to add shape and give your brows natural shine.
Try a Matte Under Eye
2016 makeup trends are having a major moment right now. Everything from contouring to cut creases is back in full swing. The matte under-eye is also enjoying a renaissance, and Love Island Star Olandria’s viral makeup style is sheer proof. Coincidentally, it’s also perfect for fall. “A dewy cheek paired with a matte under eye screams cooler weather,” says New York-based makeup artist Natalie Dresher. Not only does it create a poreless and smooth look, but it also serves as the perfect backdrop to amplify the rest of your makeup.
Whether you’re sporting a dark, vampy lip or soft, smoky eye, pairing it with a matte under-eye will enhance the look. Achieving the perfect under-eye requires baking with a loose setting powder. In 2016, the options weren’t very diverse, but today there are tons of shades to choose from. Banana, peach, pink, and lavender powders can be used to blur and mattify the area, while adding a unique touch to your makeup.
Lean Into Lashes
Dark, smoky eyes have a similar effect to vampy lipsticks during the fall. They’re sultry, dramatic, and always deliver main character energy. You can even use a variety of colors to get the look, including espresso, black, navy, or a deep forest green.
No matter which hue you settle on, La’Pearl says that lashes should be the final step. “Full lashes intensify the drama of a smoky eye, giving it a deeper look for fall,” she says. Even better? You don’t have to be a skilled makeup artist or break the bank at a salon to get the look. “Cluster lashes are easy to apply and allow you to customize your lash look,” she adds.
Don’t Ditch Your Bronzer
Bronzer is a staple during the summer for enhancing your sun-kissed skin. As you’re swapping out your makeup for fall, you may have an urge to push your bronzers to the back of the bag. After all, autumn is the season for dramatic makeup with sculpted and sharp accents.
However, celebrity makeup artist and educator at LYS Beauty, MarQuis Ward, says there’s plenty of room for bronzer in your seasonal makeup look. “Fall calls for deeper, cozier tones such as a warm bronzer,” he says. In this case, the pro explains that it’s less about changing the products and more about changing the finish so your skin feels seasonally appropriate and elevated. Even if you’re using matte products to contour and shape your face, applying bronzer can give you a healthy glow and prevent the makeup from looking too flat or dull. Ward’s pro tip? Lightly spritz the skin with a setting spray. “It melts powders into the skin for a natural, seamless finish,” he says.
Incorporate New Blush Shades
If you prefer blush over lipstick for making a bold statement, fall is the perfect time to dive into a new color. Instead of relying on classic shades like pink and rose, try incorporating a daring color for a unique look. Earthy browns and red-orange blushes feel more seasonally appropriate and create a unique effect, especially with different formulations. A warm brick blush, for example, makes for a gorgeous cheek stain, while a powder and cream duo helps to intensify the vibrance of a bright red blush.
Embrace Wine Tones
Ready for a fun twist? Enter wine washing, a technique that splashes wine tones across the face, creating a vibrant and diffused look. “This season it’s all about wine-washed eyes. Using a burgundy shade across the lids is edgy and fashion forward,” says celebrity makeup artist, Charlie Riddle. Finding the right shade for your skin tone is essential for pulling off the trend. Too heavy a shade can appear muddy, while too light won’t deliver the desired effect. If your skin is fair, Riddle recommends opting for a soft wine shadow to ensure it doesn’t overpower your makeup. Deeper complexions can lean into heavier shades, like oxblood, to create a rich and editorial-looking eye.
Keep the Skin Fresh
According to the pros, radiant skin is in this fall. “If you’re doing a burgundy lip or dramatic eye, you want to keep the skin fresh so it feels modern,” says Riddle. Ward agrees, adding that opting for radiant foundations over matte formulas helps balance your complexion, giving you a more polished and natural look. For those who tend to get oily, he recommends using a light pressed powder to softly set areas where shine tends to peek through.
