Fall 2024’s Biggest Makeup Trends Include Party Girl Eyeliner and the Return of Highlighter

Makeup artists give us all the details.

When I was younger, the week before school began (and fall therefore commenced) was dedicated to perfecting my makeup skills. Even when you’re older, there’s something so new year, new me about the trees shedding their leaves and a chill in the air. Am I alone in saying there’s a pleasure to sharpening your lip liners akin to opening a freshly sharpened box of pencils? I don’t think so. When September rolls around, my eyeshadows are my crayons and my new perfume is my new lunchbox—the thing that will tell everyone around me exactly who I am.

“I do think fall reignites people’s hunger for more glam looks as the temperatures begin to cool off,” explains Tisha Thompson, a makeup artist and founder of LYS Beauty. To be more specific? “Brows, lips, blush, and highlighters will become go-to staples. That unruly, undone brow is still making waves and blush isn’t going anywhere anytime soon! In fact, we’re just getting started,” she adds.

Ahead, a deeper dive into the looks the experts are predicting as the biggest fall 2024 makeup trends.

Shades of Red

Red has so much more to offer us than the roles we assign it to during the holiday season.

“I’m excited to see an influx in red integrated in makeup looks and I think it’s going to trickle down the fashion side, as well. Think bold red lips, pinky-red shadows, ombre lips, and even red graphic liners. We’re back in the era of fun, expressive makeup and I’m anticipating varying red hues making a big splash,” says Thompson. “I’m anticipating red having its moment this fall, and across the entire color spectrum—from burgundy to fire hydrant red, orange red, and pink red.”

When it comes to getting the look, Thompson recommends matching your red lipstick with a liner that complements your skin tone. “For deeper complexions, try a deep burgundy or dark brown liner to create a natural ombre effect,” she says. And if you’re searching for that perfect red liner? Dior’s Diorshow On Stage Liner in Satin Rust is divine.

Mood Ring Eyes

According to celebrity makeup artist and Primark US Ambassador Jenna Kristina, bold eye makeup will be back in full force this fall—if you feel up to it.

“Light washes of color over the whole eyelid, double layer liners, and a cat eye with a pop of color on the inner corner are all super fun eye looks that I think we’ll see a lot more of this year,” she says. “People use makeup as a form of creative expression based on their moods or where they are in life. If you’re feeling super playful and funky, you might experiment with vibrant colors. When you’re feeling fierce, dramatic eyeliner would be a fitting and bold choice. I recommend checking out PS…Kohl Eyeliner Pencil to easily create these liner looks and try out some new, fun colors!”

Another easy way to get the look: a colored mascara. “Mascara is a daily staple in most people’s makeup bags and is the easiest step when it comes to eye makeup. Swapping your everyday black mascara with a colored one is literally the easiest way you can experiment with color on your eyes!” explains Donni Davy, Half Magic co-founder and head Euphoria makeup artist. “You don’t have to have precision eyeliner skills or any blending ability whatsoever. You just coat those lashes and go! I am all about fun makeup being easy.”

Unsurprisingly, Half Magic brings two colored mascaras to the table: Violet Act and Teal Widdit. “You could go for a soft and pretty look using our purple shade, Violet Act, paired with a nude eyeshadow, or you could use our teal shade, Teal Widdit, and pair it with a matching turquoise eyeliner for a monochromatic look. Top that off with our turquoise Glitterpill for a gorgeous sparkly monochromatic look,” explains the artist.

Earthy Tones

Fall is a time for grounding, right? Kristina also predicts that earthier tones like browns, wines, moss, and cocoa will be big this fall. “When the temperatures cool down the makeup gets a bit deeper and richer in tone,” she explains. Brown eyeliner (or a green like Kosas Soulgazer in Eternal) is a great starting point.

Etienne Ortega, founder of Ortega and the go-to makeup artist for Lana Del Rey, is on the same page. “For the fall, I am so excited to bring back deeper tones and lip colors,” he tells Byrdie. “Those deep chocolate browns for deep complexions, the earthy brick tones for medium complexions, and the cool tone earth tones for fair skin!”

About those earth tones… celebrity makeup artist Kasey Spickard predicts that so much of our fall inspiration is going to come from the world of Wicked, which releases in November. That means lots of “dramatic, moody looks with bold liner, smoky green shadows, and dark matte lips” a la Elphaba and “flawless, luminous skin, soft pink and pastel tones, delicate liner and lashes, and pink glossy lips” for miss Glinda.

Easy Breezy

Save for the days when you’re intrigued by a funky liner look, ease is still the name of the game this season.

“There will be a strong sense of ‘one and done’ trends that the everyday makeup wearer can defer to—sticking to the basics—that make it easy to run out of the door feeling put together,” says makeup artist and AppleDoll ambassador Maya Sruoch, who assumes we’ll be pulling back on bold lips and playing more with our skin as the days get shorter. “I expect that warmer-under toned shades of blush will be in focus, as well as beauty treatments that help us feel a little more refined in our day to day (i.e. lash lifts, lash tints, brow laminations, and using more skincare-infused beauty products),” she adds. Oh, and “blonzers”—aka blush shades that also act as bronzer.

FYI: AppleDoll’s Nectar Salve ($20) is an amazing all-over balm that indeed has skincare ingredients. Throw a little over your blonzer to make it a highlighter, too.

Highlight Reel

According to Thompson, highlighter is back this fall… but with a fresh twist. “Cream-based highlighters are trending because they blend beautifully and give a dewy finish—a must as we welcome in cooler temps…especially for normal to dry skin types,” she says. “I’m loving the Aim High Highlighter Stick by LYS Beauty for its smooth, non-chunky glow that works on both simple and elevated makeup looks. Also, base products that give that lit-from-within look, like Danessa Myricks’ Yummy Skin Glow Serum, are great additions to your fall makeup routine.”

For a highlighted glow, she suggests the underpainting technique: “Apply contour, blush, and highlighter first, then a light foundation or skin tint on top. It gives a gorgeous, natural finish that looks amazing as it settles in, and gets better throughout the day.”

Vampy ‘Douyin’ Makeup

It’s official: After appearing all over American socials for the last year, Douyin-viral (that’s TikTok in China!) makeup looks have gone mainstream. And this vampy take is the ideal fall trend.

“This makeup style combines classic dark elements of the vamp aesthetic with the playful doll-like features seen in Douyin makeup. This means flawless, radiant, porcelain skin with dark smoky eyes in burgundies and plums and sharp dramatic liner,” says Spickard. “The Douyin twist is adding in pops of red or pink to add in an innocent touch to the dramatic look. Of course the look wouldn’t be complete without a vampy lip—dark oxblood, burgundy, and deep cherry with a touch of gloss at the center.”

If you’re looking for another pop culture inspired-trend, Spickard promises that Brat summer will transition into fall. “Undone, intense eyeliner, smoky eyes, nude lips, and flushed skin will continue to trend,” he says. Look to Charli XCX herself for all the inspo you could need.
