TL;DR

Our hands-down favorite was the Augustinus Bader The Face Cream Mask, which leaves the skin plump, dewy, and even helps ease eczema flare-ups. We also loved hypoallergenic LANEIGE Cica Sleeping Mask, which nourishes skin overnight, leaving it calm, smooth, and irritation-free by morning.

As anyone with sensitive skin knows, trying new products can feel like a game of skincare roulette—just one application can be enough to spark a complexion crisis. But having easily irritated skin doesn’t mean you have to miss out on the buzziest new beauty formulas. It just might take extra vigilance when selecting the right one for you.

“Hydrating and anti-inflammatory masks that are fragrance-free and non-exfoliating are ideal for sensitive skin types,” says Claire O’Bryan, FNP-C, co-founder of Skin Clique. “Look for formulas labeled as ‘soothing’ or ‘calming,’ and avoid anything that claims to ‘purify’ or ‘detox’ as these often include harsher actives. The word “glow” can also mean exfoliating as well!” she adds.

We made it our mission to track down the best face masks for sensitive skin and put many of them to the test IRL. Our team of experts evaluated the formulas on active ingredients, texture, and overall results (especially how they made our skin feel immediately and over time). Ahead, find the best face masks that will improve the look and feel of skin without causing flare-ups.

Loaded with natural amino acids, vitamins (including vitamin C), and peptides, the creamy yet lightweight mask deeply moisturizes the skin while also firming, brightening, and smoothing it. You can leave it to absorb for 10 minutes or let it sit overnight for extra nourishment. Our tester, who has sensitive skin, was a legitimate fan after using the formula for a month, noting that it quenched her dryness, eased her eczema flare-ups, and never once caused irritation. She also appreciated that it comes with a hypoallergenic Zamac applicator, which cools and de-puffs your complexion on contact and prevents bacterial contamination.

Its blend of actives, including centella asiatica (a powerful anti-inflammatory) and hydrating squalane, works while you sleep, leaving you with a calmer complexion by morning. Our tester, who has been using this mask for years, loves how quickly the soft, creamy texture melts into her skin, leaving it noticeably softer, smoother, and free from any redness or irritation. It’s also designed to fortify the skin barrier, helping prevent future flare-ups from occurring.

Ingredients: Charcoal powder, argan oil, shea butter | Skin Type: All | Size: 1 oz | Cruelty-Free: Yes

The charcoal helps draw dirt and excess sebum from your pores, while argan oil and shea butter work to restore moisture, preventing the stripped feeling that’s not ideal for sensitive complexions. The mask also contains rose water, known for its soothing properties. Our tester, who has sensitive skin, loved how comfortable and hydrated her face felt after using it.

What to Consider
  • Strong scent could be off-putting to some

Ingredients: Kaolin clay, hyaluronic acid, watermelon enzymes, beta-hydroxy acids, blueberry seed powder | Size: 2 oz | Cruelty-Free: Yes

If you’ve already written off clay masks as too harsh for your skin, think again. This non-drying formula from Glow Recipe contains hyaluronic acid-infused kaolin clay to hydrate pores as it purifies them. It also features BHAs (chemical exfoliants, gentle enough for sensitive skin) and microbeads of blueberry seed powder to help slough off dead and dull cells without upsetting your skin barrier. The mask takes just five minutes to work, and our tester was amazed by how bright, fresh, bouncy, and clean it left her sensitive skin.

What We Like
  • Reduces blackheads

  • Helps clear and shrink pores

  • Leaves skin smooth and glowy

What to Consider
  • Sticky consistency is hard to apply

Key Ingredients: Solomon’s seal powder, ginseng root extract, glycerin | Size: 4.05 oz | Cruelty-Free: Yes

If the complexion of your dreams is as clear and smooth as it is calm and resilient, try this peel-off mask from Korean beauty brand Sulwhasoo. The formula (which contains antioxidant-rich ginseng and brightening Solomon’s seal powder) goes on thick and sticky like honey but feels cool and refreshing on the skin. Once dry, you delicately peel off the formula, and the dirt and debris from your pores is removed with it. Our tester noticed that her blackheads were diminished and her pores were less noticeable after around five uses. The result was smooth and glowy, with no noticeable irritation—a big plus for her sensitive skin.

A fan favorite among individuals with sensitive skin, as well as those recovering from procedures such as IPL and laser resurfacing treatments, it promises to calm and cool the complexion, quickly eliminating redness and irritation.

Best Hydrating

First Aid Beauty Ultra Repair Instant Oatmeal Mask

What We Like
  • Hydrates and nourishes

  • Soothes and softens sensitive skin

  • Helps protect the skin barrier

  • Reduces redness and irritation

What to Consider
  • Might not be suitable for those with oily skin

Key Ingredients: Colloidal oatmeal, shea butter, bisabolol, sea buckthorn | Size: 2 oz | Cruelty-Free: Yes

If your skin is dry and sensitive, this ultra-hydrating mask might be perfect for you. The thick, nourishing formula calls on soothing colloidal oatmeal (a go-to for eczema-prone skin) and bisabolol (one of the active parts of chamomile), moisturizing shea butter, and antioxidant-rich sea buckthorn. It’s specifically designed with sensitive skin in mind, helping to keep redness, irritation, and dryness in check when used two-to-three times a week. A heads up though: If your skin is on the oilier side, this option might be a little too heavy and moisturizing for you.

What to Look for in a Face Mask for Sensitive Skin

  • Gentle Ingredients: The goal of any effective sensitive skin routine is to achieve noticeable results without irritation, which can involve a bit of trial and error. O’Bryan recommends looking for products featuring gentle, hydrating ingredients like niacinamide, ceramides, or colloidal oatmeal, which will help calm your skin and support your skin barrier with each application.
  • Nourishing Formulas: “Cream or gel formulas are typically more soothing than clay or peel-off types,” explains O’Bryan. Creams, in particular, have a thicker, more luxurious texture that helps retain moisture. That being said, clay formulas and peel-offs aren’t out of the question so long as they contain ingredients that add plenty of hydration to counteract any possible stripping effects.
  • Container Types: The best container for a sensitive skin face mask is an airless pump bottle or tube, both of which maintain the product’s integrity, minimize contamination, and don’t introduce irritants that might cause a flare-up. If your mask is in a jar, take care to use clean hands or a hygienic spatula when applying.
FAQ
  • What ingredients should you avoid in face masks if you have sensitive skin?

The list of possible sensitive skin irritants is long and varies from person to person, but as a general rule, says O’Bryan, “avoid alcohol, fragrance, essential oils, menthol, and strong exfoliants like glycolic acid, as these can all trigger an inflammatory reaction.”

  • How often should those with sensitive skin use face masks?

It’s good to read the manufacturer’s instructions, but you should see them as a suggestion rather than a rule. Go slow and monitor your skin’s reaction. O’Bryan even suggests doing a patch test first. “Sensitive skin thrives with consistency and gentle support, not overstimulation,” she explains.

  • What certifications or product labels actually matter for sensitive skin?

As a consumer, it can be hard to separate truth from marketing hype, especially because labels are not consistently regulated. “Fragrance-free can be a good starting point,” says O’Bryan, “and some masks or products are actually approved by the National Rosacea Foundation.”  Always review the ingredient list, and if in doubt, consult a board-certified skincare provider for personalized advice, O’Bryan advises.
