I Regularly Test Lip Products—This Iconic Lipstick Is My Go-To for Winter
It’s taken my feed by storm.

Byrdie
I’m a creature of habit when it comes to my makeup routine, often sticking to the same look no matter the occasion. The one area where I like to mix it up is my lips, whether with a gloss, balm, or lipstick. Because of this, I own tons of lip products (which is unfortunate for my bank account), but I love testing new options to add to my routine. So, when I saw Clinique’s Black Honey lipstick going viral yet again (it’s been beloved by makeup artists for years), I knew I had to try it.
Aptly titled “Almost Lipstick,” the product is more of a glossy lip balm packaged in a nifty lipstick tube. Originally launched by the brand in 1989, it experienced a resurgence a few years ago thanks to its universally flattering shade that complements a wide range of skin tones—a robust berry that can appear sheer or bold depending on how much is applied. I’m not usually a fan of darker lip colors, but I was intrigued. While I purchased it due to the online hype, it’s now earned a place in my rotation thanks to its versatility as the perfect lip for day and night.

Formula is king for me when purchasing lip products, and this one is a winner—especially for winter. It has a smooth, creamy consistency that feels hydrating and comfortable—and the formula’s candelilla and carnauba waxes create a soft feel. And the super slim tube makes for a precise, mess-free application. If you’re like me and love to smudge lip products with your fingers, you’ll love that this formula spreads easily without bleeding.

While the brand describes the finish as sheer, I definitely find it buildable. I have two application methods depending on the occasion. During the day, I apply a good layer of lip balm, then layer Black Honey immediately on top, creating a natural and glossy finish—I’d describe it as a my-lips-but-better look. For the perfect night-out lip, I apply it on dry lips for a bolder color payoff and a satiny finish. No matter how many coats I apply, it stains my lips and leaves a slight hint of color even after it fades.
All in all, I’m a big fan of Clinique’s Black Honey, and it’s become my go-to when I’m in the mood for a pop of color. I definitely think it lives up to its icon status.

If you can’t get enough of Black Honey, don’t fret. Clinique has plenty of products in the same colorway, including a juicy lip oil and a volumizing mascara.
