Slipping into bed under a cozy blanket is arguably one of the best parts of the day. It’s your time to unwind, relax, and get comfortable—and I truly believe it all starts with finding the right pair of pajamas. While sure, you could throw on a T-shirt and call it a night, there’s something that feels so luxurious about putting on a cute pajama set, and I love how this one simple act instantly makes me feel put together.

I can confidently say that my friends would dub me the pajama set queen—and I’ve convinced even my most stubborn “T-shirt and undies” friends to buy a pair (and they’ve since thanked me for changing their life). If you’re on the hunt for the best pajamas for women, Byrdie editors tested and gathered our list of all-time favorites, from cooling sets to cotton and silk finds.

We simply would be remiss not to include Eberjey in a list of the best pajamas for women. The brand really is worth the hype, specifically this cropped sleep set. Byrdie Associate Editorial Director Ally Hirschlag says they’re “ridiculously comfortable” and “the modal/spandex fabric feels like the softest jersey you’ve ever worn.” They’re stylist-backed as well: “Their pajamas are heavenly, soft, and chic,” says fashion stylist Samantha Brown.

What’s also nice about these pajamas is how versatile they are. They’re lightweight and airy, making them the perfect transition set from summer to fall, yet also warm enough not to need a robe while lounging around the house.

Ally Hirschlag, associate editorial director: “This set feels like it belongs in a Nora Efron movie; it gives effortless heroine in a rom-com energy. You can lounge all day in them and feel so good, but also answer the door in them and definitely get a wink from the delivery guy.”

The quality and material of Lake pajamas are truly top-notch. My personal favorite of the brand’s wide selection is their DreamModal Kimono set. The modal fabric is buttery-soft and stays that way after multiple rounds through the washer. Plus, after washing and drying them many times over the past year, I can confirm they don’t shrink (which is why I prefer them over the brand’s cotton pajamas, which I find do shrink some).

Even more, as someone who gets hot at night, I never have a problem with these pajamas—they keep me comfortable throughout my eight hours of z’s. And I’d be remiss not to mention the ultra-chic design of this pair. From the vertical striping to the wrap feature, these make me look and feel put together even while I’m sleeping.

Anna Traver, writer: “Lake’s fabric is to die for; its soft feeling stays intact even after multiple rounds through the washer and dryer. Plus, the wrap style of the top makes me feel so elevated and chic, as if I’m dressing up to go to bed (without all of the effort, of course). You need these in your pajama collection if you’re OK with a little splurge.”

Cotton is an excellent fabric if you tend to overheat, which is why Byrdie Associate Editor Emily Cieslak loves these BedHead Pajamas that are made mostly of organic cotton (with a bit of elastane for stretch). She noted how the fabric is ultrasoft and seems to only get softer with each wash, yet the color of the fabric doesn’t fade or dull.

Emily Cieslak, associate editor: “Before getting this set, I barely wore pajamas, but the fun print and vivid colors make them hard to resist! I tend to overheat while sleeping, but these cotton pajamas keep me cool.”

Prefer a tank top pajama set? Look no further than these PJs by Honeydew. Despite being a tank, Byrdie Social Media Director Star Donaldson says they stay put all night long, and she likes how the long pants offer a bit of coverage (and they offer some extra warmth to balance out the coolness of the tank). Plus, the silky-smooth modal fabric is lightweight and airy to sleep in.

Star Donaldson, social media director: “The fit of this top is a little boxy, but that totally works for sleepwear, and the straps are the perfect length for keeping everything covered all night long. I also love the long pants; they’re lightweight but offer coverage, so they really work for any season.”

Can’t be bothered to wear pants? Understandable. For an excellent nightshirt option, Byrdie Senior Editor Lauren Pardee loves Petite Plume’s. It’s hard to beat the quality, made from 100% Peruvian Pima Cotton, a luxurious, oh-so-soft type of cotton. Aside from being extremely soft, Pardee says the nightshirt is lightweight and even has a cooling effect, and has “held up beautifully after countless washes and wears.”

Lauren Pardee, senior editor: “Investing in these pajamas is a decision you won’t regret. They are incredibly comfortable, and with their adorable design, you’ll feel and look good every time you wear them.”

Best Silk

Size: XS-XL | Material: Mulberry Silk | Colors: 7

There’s nothing that will make you feel more luxurious than slipping into a pair of silk pajamas. While this pair from Lunya is an investment, we think it’s worth it if you want silk PJs that will last through the wash and are super flattering. The silk fabric is as smooth as butter, and the high-waisted, wide-leg pants and cropped, boxy tank are chic—in fact, Byrdie Beauty Editor Eden Stuart says she would even wear them out if the material were a little heavier.

Eden Stuart, beauty editor: “These PJs are definitely a splurge, but if you have the funds and are looking for the perfect well-fitted, streamlined, lightweight silk pajamas for your best sophisticated lady cosplay, these are them.”

Best Modal

Skims Soft Lounge Sleep Set

Size: XXS-4X | Material: Modal, spandex | Colors: 5

While this pajama set from Skims may look simple, it’s one of our favorites because of how scrumptious it feels. The modal fabric feels soft to the touch and buttery against the skin, making it an ideal blend of cozy and not too hot. We also love that it’s available in sizes XXS-4X and five colorways, from classic neutrals to seasonal favorites.

What to Look for When Buying Pajamas

  • Material: Brown recommends cotton, modal, and jersey for your pajamas. “Cotton is the most breathable and durable, as well as one of the most sustainable fabrics (particularly if it’s organic!). Modal and jersey are super soft and have some stretch, which is a nice contrast to cotton, which is a bit stiffer,” she says. “Modal is less wrinkly and can look more luxurious than cotton, making it an excellent fabric for high-end pajamas. Jersey is the coziest and stretchiest. It has a very soft, worn-in feel.” Other popular pajama fabrics include silk, which is often pricier but feels ultra-luxe and soft, as well as fleece and flannel, which are great for the colder months for extra warmth.
  • Fit: Your nighttime getup (to lie down in) should fit comfortably, with enough room to move freely without feeling restricted. This can mean different things to different people. Still, the general rule of thumb is a waistband that doesn’t dig into the skin and a secure yet relaxed silhouette, ensuring optimal coziness for a good night’s rest.
  • Length: The ideal length for your jammies can vary based on personal preference, the season, and comfort. People typically opt for longer pants in the winter and shorts in the summer, but it also depends on whether you tend to run hot or cold. If you’re shopping for pants, check the inseam length and consider selecting a style with different inseams if you are tall or petite.

How We Tested Pajamas for Women

For this story, we tapped Byrdie editors and stylists to see which pairs of pajamas they swear by (some having been wearing their picks for a year or more).

  • Methodology: We tested pajamas for women in the real world, wearing them to bed on multiple occasions, running them through the washer and dryer, and lounging around the house. Factors considered: Warmth/coolness, fabric, durability, comfort, softness, design, fit
FAQ
  • What pajamas are best for those who run hot?

If you’re a hot sleeper, you’ll want to look for lightweight, cooling fabrics for your pajamas, like cotton and modal. “If you run hot, loose cotton pajamas can help keep you cool,” Brown says. “Modal is moisture-wicking and breathable, so it’s also a great option for those who run hot.”

  • Is it healthier to sleep in pajamas or naked?

Again, it’s a personal preference! While sleeping naked may keep you cooler and more comfortable, opting for the right pajamas can also help regulate your body temperature. Further, by making a habit of putting on pajamas during your nighttime routine, you can also help signal to your brain that it’s time to go to bed.

  • How often should you change your pajamas?

The frequency of replacing pajamas is influenced by several factors, including how often you wear them, their dual use as sleepwear and everyday wear, and individual body characteristics. “If you wear the same pair of pajamas every night, they will endure more wear and tear, accumulating body oils and sweat more rapidly,” says fashion stylist Stefaniya Veresovaya. In this case, she says, replacing them every six to eight months might be appropriate.
