TL;DR

We found that the Redken One United Multi-Benefit Treatment Spray combines the power of several styling products in one. It helps repair split ends, restores vibrancy to hair color, and doubles as a leave-in conditioner and a heat protectant, making it the top treatment on our list. On the other hand, the Briogeo Don’t Despair, Repair! Rice Water Protein + Moisture Strengthening Treatment is a great in-shower option for achieving silky, smooth strands, helping you achieve salon-quality blowout results at home.

Whether you book your hair coloring appointments months in advance (because outgrown roots don’t sleep!) or stick to a simple hair care routine of tight ponytails and daily brushing, chances are you could benefit from a hair breakage treatment. These treatments come in the form of hair masks, spritz-and-mist leave-in conditioners, and in-shower formulas, but they all share the same purpose: to condition and strengthen your hair with hydrating or protein-building properties that help every texture, type, and color look its best.

Celebrity stylist Anthony Cristiano explains that by using a hair breakage treatment, “you can replenish the hydration of the hair, strengthen the inner core, and begin to rebuild the cuticle, all of which are key elements to regaining the hair’s health.” With emphasis on his note about replenishment—it’s never a bad time to prevent future damage and incorporate a hair breakage treatment into your everything routine to feed your strands some TLC, even if you wouldn’t describe your strands as particularly damaged.

With all of this in mind, we put 11 hair breakage treatments to the test on individuals with various hair types (ranging from fine, color-processed hair to curly and frizzy hair) over the course of four weeks, incorporating them into our weekly and bi-weekly hair care routines. Every tester took note of how smoothly the treatments applied, the consistency of the formulas, and the overall effectiveness in addressing their hair concerns. Keep reading to see which treatments performed best.

While many damage repair treatments come in the form of masks or in-shower products, this spray stands out as a post-shower essential, working just like a reliable detangling leave-in conditioner. Our tester, Chelsea, who has fine, wavy hair, often struggles with frizz-fighting products that weigh her strands down and do nothing for her color. But after just one use of this treatment spray, she noticed an immediate difference. Her hair looked shinier, more manageable, and stayed that way throughout the day. Although the brand recommends applying it to damp hair, Chelsea found that it softened, hydrated, and defined her waves beautifully when applied to dry hair, all without leaving behind buildup by the end of the testing period.

Since it multitasks as a heat protectant, detangler, and hydrator too, this damage repair treatment performed notably well for pre-blowout prep or as a day three (or four) pre-wash day ritual. It’s a one-and-done-er as they say, replacing every other styling product in our tester’s routine.

Chelsea, tester with fine, wavy hair: “This treatment REVIVED my color! I’ve been transitioning out of red and going back to my brunette roots, and this was the only hair treatment that cancelled out the brassiness and dullness I’ve been experiencing ever since starting the transition.”

Another universal crowd-pleaser, this can do its reparative duties in a mere 60 seconds; its bond-building technology targets the bonds in your hair that need the most help. The formula is also packed with plant butters such as mango and shea butter, making it deeply hydrating. It was an attribute our tester (who specifically noted that her bleached hair needed lots of moisture to keep the ends from snapping) loved. But perhaps the best part? While you can just leave it on for a minute and then rinse it out (it does rinse cleanly, btw), you can alternately use it as a leave-in. Either way, our tester found that it didn’t leave any unwanted residue behind.

Bianca, tester with 4B/C bleached hair: “I used this before getting cornrows and during my wash and go’s. I found that my shedding after removing my cornrows was significantly less, and my hair still felt hydrated when I removed them, which isn’t always the case. I enjoyed using this as a leave-in, so I got to the point where I didn’t rinse it out once I saw how hydrated my hair stayed.”

Best Softening

What We Like
  • Keeps hair feeling soft, light, and never greasy, even on fine strands

  • Softens and strengthens fragile strands

  • Offers 450 degrees of heat protection

What to Consider
  • Has a runny consistency

Hair Type: All| Usage: Damp or dry hair | Size: 2.5, 5.9 oz| Cruelty-Free: Yes

Serums are notoriously known for their “silkifying” powers on hair textures of all kinds, and as our tester began to incorporate this serum-based treatment into her hair care routine every three days, she noticed that her hair felt drastically softer and smoother. Even her ends, which she described as damaged and split  before the testing period began, felt stronger.

It may be one of the more expensive damage repair treatments to choose from, but depending on your hair texture, only a dollop-sized amount or a full pump of product is needed. This 6-ounce (and might I add, gorgeous) silhouette of a butter-yellow bottle will last you a while. We also love the ingredients Oribe chose to feature in this formula, such as plant-based protein, chia seed, and bio-fermented bamboo leaf, which focus on the elasticity and overall protection of the hair cuticle.

Ashley, tester with fine and straight hair: “I like how gentle [this product] is on my hair. Most products weigh my hair down—which is the exact opposite of what I need with fine, thin hair—and this doesn’t have that effect.”

Contrary to popular belief, hair health starts at the scalp (I, myself, have found this to be true). The Kérastase Genesis Serum Fortifiant Hair Serum provides relief to an itchy and dry scalp, according to our tester, and has a wonderful way of serving as a scalp-care ritual, as its dropper applicator is perfect for targeting specific areas along the crown or nape of the hair shaft (think: scalp massages to end the night right). While it stood out for its lightweight feel on the scalp and soothing attributes, we wouldn’t necessarily rely on this hair serum for maximizing hydration or adding moisture to split ends. We do, however, appreciate its subtle scent, which keeps hair feeling and smelling clean throughout the day, even if you plan on participating in a sweaty workout.

Kate, tester with curly, thinning, and frizzy hair: “Overall, I’d say it stood out for how clean and lightweight it felt on my scalp, but it didn’t deliver the same level of hydration or curl-friendliness that I get from my other go-to products.”

Hair Type: All| Usage: In-shower rinse-out treatment| Size: 5 oz | Cruelty-Free: Yes

If you’ve spent the summer bleaching or chemically treating your hair, take this as your sign to begin a serious repair journey. A great place to start? This hydrating in-shower mask penetrates the scalp and hair cuticle, replenishing strands from root to tip. While it isn’t meant to replace your conditioner, this Briogeo strengthening treatment is designed as a second step after shampooing—adding just 10 extra minutes to your wash day routine.

Our tester, who’s been growing out bleached hair, knows the challenge of keeping damaged ends soft and manageable. After using this treatment for a month, she noticed a visible improvement in detangling, smoothness, and overall manageability of her grown-out blonde strands. “I’ve been looking for a hair treatment that could fit both my growth and damage,” she shares. After her very first use—before even applying conditioner—her hair felt instantly smoother and once air-dried, had the look of a natural blowout.

The benefits didn’t stop there. On fine hair, this treatment delivered noticeable lift at the roots, added fullness, and hydrated bleached ends without leaving behind heavy buildup. The kicker? It performed like a luxe conditioner paired with a silky color coat. That said, it’s not a replacement for your regular trims; its split-end recovery powers didn’t quite measure up.

Cam, tester with straight, long, and thin hair: “After washing it out with a quick rinse, it came out easily and left my locks feeling like an instantaneous blow-dry, even with air-dried hair. When using heat, it gave my hair extra sheen on my otherwise thirsty hair.”

Best for Frizz

What We Like
  • Smooths frizzy waves

  • Absorbs well and make waves/curls more buoyant

  • Product scent lingers on the hair throughout the day

What to Consider
  • Adding too much product might weigh down waves

Hair Type: All| Usage: Can be rinsed out or used as a leave-in | Size: 2, 5 oz | Cruelty-Free: Yes

While we found ourselves trialing through different application methods when testing this damage repair treatment by Fenty, we discovered its versatility lies in taming flyaways, adding definition to waves and curls, and smoothing the hair with its creamy consistency. Whether you apply it as a leave-in or wash it out after five minutes of application in the shower, the best results depend on whether you have wavy or tight, curly hair.

So, you may need to experiment with different application methods to find the one that works best for you at the start of use. We mention this because, by the end of the testing period, our tester noticed that applying this product as a leave-in conditioner yielded fewer results for her waves than it would have if she had used it as a rinse-out treatment. “It did work as promised (strengthening, repairing damage, smoothing frizz), but it weighed my hair down a bit more than I would have liked,” she mentions. Another standout feature, in particular, was that signature Fenty scent this product has: a floral, fruity, and a touch of musk.

Margaret, tester with 1C hair: “I would recommend it to anyone struggling with frizz, with the caveat that they should experiment between the wash-out method and leave-in method to figure out what works best for them.”

Best Fast-Working

What We Like
  • Results are immediate

  • Provides noticeable softening and volumizing benefits

  • Subtle and pleasant scent

What to Consider
  • May not be suitable for fine hair

Hair Type: All | Usage: In-shower | Size: 4.2 oz | Cruelty-Free: Yes

Generally, improving the quality of your hair isn’t necessarily a super speedy affair. That’s why we were so impressed by how quickly this treatment worked. Our tester raved about how it changed the quality and appearance of her bleached and dry hair after just one use, leaving it softer and with noticeable volume. (Credit a bond-building complex in the formula, which repairs the bonds responsible for the shape and strength of the hair cuticle). Plus, the product is easy to use—just leave it on for five minutes in the shower—it distributes evenly, rinses cleanly, and only needs to be applied once a week. Our only (minor) gripe? We wish the bottle were slightly bigger so we didn’t have to worry about running out of this miraculous strand saver.

Samantha, tester with 4B bleached hair: “I feel like the structure of my hair is typically quite compromised and constantly needs some TLC to offset the toll of the bleaching. I noticed the difference in my hair after the very first treatment! My hair was softer and looked just as it felt—less damaged!”

Best for Curly Hair

What We Like
  • Leaves curls smooth and hydrated

  • Pleasant coconut scent

  • Keeps curls looking bouncy the next day after use

What to Consider
  • Some may consider the scent overpowering

Hair Type: Curly | Usage: In-shower | Size: 8 oz | Cruelty-Free: Yes

Curly hair tends to be innately drier than straight hair and, in turn, can also be more susceptible to damage and breakage. Enter this cream mask, specially formulated to condition and strengthen curls, all while adding plenty of smoothness and shine. It did all that and more, according to our curly-haired tester (who also deals with split ends). She especially loved how nice it left her curls looking for several days between washes and that it also left them feeling very hydrated. While the bottle is pretty large, she noted that some even bigger sizes would be nice, given that those with curly hair tend to go through a lot of product. However, a little bit of this formula does go a long way.

Elizabeth, tester with 4B hair and split ends: “This has become an absolute staple. I’d say it was exceptionally made for curls because the cream mask really holds onto my strands and nourishes my hair deeply.”

What We Like
  • You can skip conditioner and apply it as a leave-in mask

  • Adds strength and reduces breakage

  • Easy to spread and apply

What to Consider
  • Must wait four minutes between application and styling

Hair Type: All | Usage: Leave-in | Size: 0.5, 1.7 oz | Cruelty-Free: Yes

This product is admittedly on the pricier side and has garnered a significant amount of social media hype—a combination that could be slightly off-putting for skeptics. But take this for a test run, and you’re sure to be impressed. Our tester couldn’t get over how transformative this was on her damaged curls, calling out that she felt it minimized breakage enough that her hair could grow again. Coupled with that, it also adds smoothness, shine, and body—what more could you ask for? Per its superlative, there’s no need to wash it out. However, it is worth mentioning that you do need to leave it be for four minutes between application and styling, a practice that takes a little bit of getting used to if you always jump right in with your blow-dryer.

Site Loop: person showing before and after using K18 Biomimetic Hairscience Leave-In Molecular Repair Hair Mask

Ashley, tester with 2C hair with moderate damage and split ends: “The mask reversed all of the damage I’ve done to my hair from dyes, bleaches, and heat. My curls haven’t been able to grow in a very long time because of breakage and damage. For the first time in years, my hair is slowly starting to grow and feels the healthiest it’s been in a while.”

What We Like
  • Works as a treatment and heat protectant

  • Doesn’t offer any immediate benefits to hair’s appearance

It’s not breaking news that heat is one of the biggest culprits when it comes to hair damage. So it makes total sense to create a reparative treatment that also doubles as a heat protectant, which is exactly what Living Proof did with this formula. It shields your strands from temps up to 450 degrees while also helping reduce breakage. It’s also worth noting that our tester didn’t see any benefits or changes to her hair immediately after using this. However, after continued use, she did notice that her damaged, dry split ends weren’t breaking off as much—letting her hair grow out longer than it’s ever been.

Site Loop: person showing before and after using Living Proof Triple Bond Complex Leave-in Hair Treatment

Ashley, tester with 1B bleached hair and dry, damaged split ends: “I have been growing out my hair for the last few months, and even though the ends are damaged, they’re not breaking off as much—this is the longest my hair has been in years)—so I would say it’s definitely helping with breakage.”

  • Effective bond repair

What to Consider

Hair Type: Thin, fine| Usage: Apply on damp hair at least 10 minutes before washing | Size: 3.3, 8.5oz| Cruelty-Free: Yes

You’ve likely seen this little white bottle before—it’s everywhere. Touted as a catchall hair treatment for common concerns like flyaways, breakage, and frizz, it helps repair broken bonds. The result: Shiny, smooth hair. After continued use, you’ll notice your hair is softer and way easier to manage. It’s recommended that you use it weekly on damp hair prior to shampooing and conditioning. It’s lightweight and easily spreadable, so it won’t take too long; however, if you want to see more impressive results, it’s best to leave it on for as long as possible. Just don’t exceed using it more than once or twice a week; doing so can dry out your hair.

Heidi, tester with fine, wavy hair: “I immediately noticed a difference in frizz control. This product made blowing out my hair much easier, and it extended the life of my blowouts. My hair felt light and airy with nice volume.”

What to Look for in a Damage Repair Treatment

  • Ingredients: Look for moisturizing ingredients such as coconut oil, avocado oil, castor oil, and botanical blends in your desired damage repair treatment. Oils are especially effective at delivering and maintaining hydration. While, “lipids will fill your hair, protein strengthens it, and moisture hydrates your strands,” says celebrity hairstylist Paul Labrecque. “With any of these key ingredients off balance, breakage can occur.” You can also seek out options that feature bond-building technology, which works to repair damaged bonds that make up the hair strands.
  • Texture: These types of replenishing treatments come in various formulas, so choose one that works for you and your hair texture (what brings moisture back to tight curls, may weigh down fine waves for example). Some have a conditioner-like consistency and can be applied and then rinsed out in the shower. Thicker creams can often be left on overnight as a mask, while oils and serums are another option. Regardless, check the product directions for guidelines on whether they should be applied to wet or dry hair and how long the product should be left on.
  • Time: Incorporating anti-breakage products into your routine does just that—it adds an extra step. Keep time in mind when looking for a product since some require more dedication than others. When time is of the essence, reach for sprays and other repair treatments that can work in 60 seconds and deliver seriously impressive results after just a few uses. Certain masks, on the other hand, require the formula to sit in the hair for up to 10 minutes. Some leave-in products, however, can stay in your hair and don’t have to be washed out.

How We Tested Hair Breakage Treatments

With a product as result-driven as a hair breakage treatment, it was only fitting to have testers who struggle with breakage, frizz, manageability, and dullness try out our top contenders for a month at home to ensure real-world results.

  • Treatments Tested: 11
  • Testing Period: Four weeks
  • Methodology: Our testers (all of whom had different hair textures and a variety of concerns, including split ends, dryness, and damage) used the hair breakage treatments according to the product directions and at least once per week.
  • Factors Considered: Application, product consistency, ease of use, and overall improvement in hair texture, vibrancy, and strand health.
FAQ
  • How do you prevent hair breakage?

According to stylist Nunzio Saviano, there are a few measures you can take to prevent hair breakage. “Lack of moisture can contribute to hair breakage, so I recommend using a weekly deep conditioning mask formulated for your hair type, such as a mask for dry or damaged hair.” He also recommends blow-drying your hair from damp (or at least 70% dry)—and never while it’s dripping wet. Overdoing it with hot tools—especially without a heat protectant—can also lead to breakage. “I tell my clients not to use hot tools more than one or two times a week and only to use them with heat protection,” he says.

  • Who should use a hair breakage treatment?

Most people can benefit from a hair breakage treatment, Chicago-based hairstylist Robert Reyes confirms. However, they can be an especially good option for those who blow-dry and/or use hot tools every day or have highlighted or chemically-treated hair. And while there isn’t anyone who should specifically avoid using them, hairstylist Taylor Carter says to be careful with treatments that contain too much protein if you are someone with severely damaged hair. “Too much protein can make hair stiff and cause more breakage, so protein treatments should be used in moderation (typically once every 2–4 weeks depending on your hair type and condition.” According to Carter, hair breakage treatments heal split ends, restore moisture, and pack on the nutrients. And who doesn’t need a little bit of that from time to time?

  • Can a haircut get rid of breakage?

Absolutely. In fact, Reyes says that a quick trim is actually the most effective way to deal with damage. He likens hair breakage treatments to a Band-Aid, great for helping seal split ends and creating the appearance of healthier hair. But to fully get rid of split ends and ensuing breakage, a trim is the best option.

  • Are there different kinds of hair breakage treatments?

Whether hair breakage treatments are used as preventative or restorative, you can opt for a formula that is either hydration-forward or protein-based. Cristiano suggests alternating between the two, using hydration products daily and protein-based formulas more sparingly since protein buildup may potentially make the hair drier and more brittle. Carter adds that a hydrating treatment will replenish the moisture in the hair shaft, “improving elasticity and preventing breakage that can come from tangled hair.” While, protein-based treatments target gaps and damage already in the hair and prevent further damage from any chemicals and heat. To sum it up, she says, “If you ever get confused on what treatment to use just remember: moisture makes hair flexible, protein makes hair strong.”
