TL;DR
Our favorite cuticle oil is the Cuccio Milk and Honey Cuticle Oil, which absorbs quickly and hydrates and fortifies nails. We also love Sally Hansen’s Vitamin E Nail & Cuticle Oil—its one-of-a-kind formula works hard to strengthen thin, bendable nails and leave cuticles hydrated and healthy—all at an affordable price.
Whether you’re a salon appointment stan or a DIY-er through and through, cuticle oil is one product that takes any manicure to the next level. It does so much more than you might think, such as supporting overall nail health, promoting nail growth, and even extending the longevity of your manicure, whether it’s gel, regular polish, or extensions. According to Evelyn Lim, an editorial manicurist and chief educator at Paintbox, cuticle oil hydrates the nail and the surrounding skin, resulting in nails that are healthy and strong. “When you use cuticle oil, you’ll have fewer breaks, hangnails, and chips,” she adds.
To cover all the bases, our team—myself included—tested more than 30 of the best cuticle oils at home over a two-week period, evaluating each one’s application, absorption, and effectiveness in nourishing and strengthening the nails. With our curated list of the best cuticle oils below, you’ll be on your way to stronger, healthier nails.

Hydrating, strengthening formula
-
Precise dropper for easy application
-
Pleasant scent
-
Takes a few minutes to absorb
Key Ingredients: Safflower oil, cottonseed oil, vitamin E | Dosage: As needed | Size: 2.5 oz | Cruelty-Free: Yes
Cuccio’s Naturale Revitalizing Hydrating Oil is our favorite cuticle oil we’ve come across, thanks to its easy, mess-free application and noticeable long-term results. Our tester loved that its dropper allows for precise control—even with her non-dominant hand—and a little goes a long way (just one drop per nail was enough!). Over time, she noticed less dryness around her nails, stronger nail beds, and cuticles that were easier to maintain. Its pleasant, long-lasting scent only added to its appeal.
However, this oil took a couple of minutes to absorb fully and left a slight residue. Our tester also noted that while it left her skin feeling hydrated after each use, it took consistent application over time to see improvements in her nail strength and conditioning. Overall, our tester found this to be a solid, affordable option that delivers steady results.
Katie, tester: “After applying this product, my cuticles were easier to maintain, and over time, I noticed less dry skin forming around my nails. They also seemed much stronger after prolonged use.”

Vitamin E nourishes and repairs
-
A little goes a long way
-
Easy to control
-
The top can get greasy and hard to open
Key Ingredients: Safflower oil, apricot kernel oil, coconut oil | Dosage: Nightly | Size: 0.45 oz | Cruelty-Free: No
Specifically formulated for those ultra-dry, beat-up cuticles (you know the kind), this brush-on cuticle oil works wonders to soften, hydrate, and strengthen the skin around the nail. We found the treatment easy all around—easy to apply, easy to incorporate into an existing routine, and easy on the wallet. Because of the brush-tip applicator, you’re able to control how much of the product is used and where exactly you want to deposit it. With consistent use, it transformed our tester’s nails into their healthiest state.
Something to keep in mind: The bottle is made with a slippery material, so if you get any oil on your hands or fingers, you may have a hard time opening and closing the cap. We recommend cleaning the top after every use so you don’t run into this issue.

Nourishing but not greasy
-
Easy to apply evenly
-
Subtle scent
-
Takes several minutes to absorb
-
May not support nail growth long-term
-
Brush applicator slightly messy
Key Ingredients: Vitamin E and copra, rosehip, and rice bran oils | Dosage: As needed | Size: 0.5 oz | Cruelty-Free: Yes
CND LightningOil Nail & Cuticle Oil earned high marks from our tester as the best hydrating option thanks to its balanced texture and lasting effects. Packaged in a nail polish-style bottle with a brush, it was easy to swipe on evenly, delivering just the right amount of product for multiple nails at once. The formula struck the perfect middle ground—rich enough to deeply moisturize without feeling greasy—while adding an instant, healthy-looking sheen. Our tester especially loved its subtle yuzu ginger scent, noting that it kept her nails and cuticles soft and hydrated for hours after each application.
That said, the oil didn’t quite live up to its “lightning” name, taking a few minutes to absorb. Also, while it helped with dryness and cracking, it didn’t deliver long-term benefits for nail growth or strength, and its brush applicator could feel slightly messy compared to cleaner pen-style formats. Still, with its lingering hydration, lovely scent, and instant visual boost, it remains a standout pick for those who want their cuticles to look and feel their best.

Melanie, tester: “I honestly loved the scent the most, but in terms of efficacy, I loved how long-lasting the moisture was and how it imparted lots of hydration to my cuticles and skin while leaving my nails with a healthy-looking sheen.”

-
Squeezing tube too hard dispenses too much product
Key Ingredients: Jojoba seed, apricot kernel, and sunflower seed oils | Dosage: As needed | Size: 0.46 oz | Cruelty-Free: No
Essie On A Roll Apricot Cuticle Oil easily earns the title of best roll-on, thanks to its travel-friendly tube and mess-free applicator. I loved how precise the rollerball was—it made applying oil directly to the root of my nails quick and easy, even on the go. The lightweight formula absorbed well without feeling greasy, leaving the skin around my cuticles noticeably softer and more hydrated after a few weeks of use. The subtle apricot scent was another highlight, adding a touch of self-care without being overpowering.
The only small drawback I noticed was that squeezing the tube too hard initially could dispense more product than needed, but this was easy to adjust with practice. Since my nails are currently recovering from months of consistent gel manicures, I haven’t yet seen significant improvements in nail strength, although the hydration benefits of this oil are undeniable. Overall, this product felt like a simple, portable luxury I’d happily repurchase and recommend to anyone dealing with dryness.

-
Lemon scent is slightly harsh
-
Requires consistent application to see results
Key Ingredients: Grapeseed, sesame, kukui, sunflower, and cupuaçu oils | Dosage: As needed | Size: 0.5 oz | Cruelty-Free: No
OPI ProSpa Nail & Cuticle Oil is the fastest-absorbing formula we tested by far—according to our tester, it took just five to 10 seconds. She also loved its polish-style brush, which made swiping across the cuticles fast, precise, and mess-free. With regular use, her nails and cuticles felt more nourished and hydrated, with a subtle boost in nail strength and growth.
On the flip side, our tester noted that while the oil delivered hydration, the results weren’t dramatic and required consistent, twice-daily use to maintain. Also, she felt that its strong scent smelled more similar to a cleaning product. Overall, she found this a reliable, everyday option that balances speed, hydration, and convenience.

Texture is runny
Key Ingredients: Jojoba seed oil, almond oil, evening primrose oil | Dosage: As needed | Size: 0.5 oz | Cruelty-Free: Yes
This oil is worth the splurge; let us explain why. First, its fragrance is nothing short of incredible. As the name suggests, it smells like honeysuckle and primrose—so we won’t blame you if you want to douse your fingers and toes in it day and night. Second, it imparts a really nice conditioning effect that heals dryness and restores soft, healthy skin. Just keep in mind that it skews on the runny side, so you’ll want to be extra intentional about how much you pick up in the dropper.

Genevieve, tester: “My cuticles are not as dry and flaky as they usually are. I’ve also noticed that I’m getting fewer hangnails. Any irritation from doing my own nails—particularly the removal process—seems to have cleared up a lot faster than it normally would.”

Nongreasy
-
Fragrance-free
-
Hard to dispense the product at first
Key Ingredients: Avocado oil, apricot oil | Dosage: As needed | Size: Comes in a set with 0.14 oz for serum | Cruelty-Free: Yes
Think of this as a souped-up version of basic cuticle oil. It has plenty of hydrating ingredients (avocado, apricot, and jojoba, to name a few), but also contains cactus flower extract, a strengthening ingredient that’s great for damaged skin. Bonus points for its soft foam tip that makes for an easy and entirely mess-free application.
The only qualm we have with this one is that Olive & June claims that you’ll need to twist the bottom two or three times to deposit the formula. Still, we didn’t notice any product coming out of the top until the 20th twist—but after this initial hiccup, application was a breeze.

Elise, tester: “I absolutely love the design of this cuticle oil pen. The applicator is a fuzzy, round felt tip that makes application so easy and mess-free. None of the product spills or leaks, and you can control how much pressure you apply, thus how much product you put on.”

Doesn’t absorb instantly
Key Ingredients: Shea butter, almond oil, castor oil | Dosage: As needed | Size: 0.25 oz | Cruelty-Free: No
L’Occitane’s cuticle oil has legions of devoted fans‚ and for good reason. It boasts a blend of shea butter and nourishing oils (including almond, castor, and avocado) to soften cuticles and deeply hydrate the skin around your nails. It also absorbs into the skin nicely and doesn’t leave a greasy mess in its wake. The scent is also lovely, though the results it delivers provide enough incentive to apply it daily.
Our tester was especially impressed with its brush tip applicator, which makes application fuss-free and enjoyable. Over time, she saw a noticeable difference in the look of her nails and surrounding skin—so much so that a nail tech complimented her on how much healthier and hydrated they looked.
Cindy, tester: “The cuticle oil was very effective at hydrating my nails. It also helped with excessive hand washing and the cold weather. My nails are less prone to breakage and have grown longer.”
What to Look for in a Cuticle Oil
A good cuticle oil can transform your nails to their healthiest state yet. Consider the following points to determine which cuticle oil is best for you.
Hydrating Ingredients: Most cuticle oils are formulated from a base of oils (obviously), and that’s a good thing when you’re dealing with rough, dry cuticles or thin, breaking nails. Look for hydrating oils like argan, mango, sunflower, avocado, jojoba, or other nourishing ingredients like vitamin E. “[These types of ingredients] are excellent because they closely mimic the skin’s natural oils, absorb easily, and deliver deep hydration,” says UK-based nail artist Annabel Maginnis.
Packaging: Since there are many different forms of cuticle oil available—from serums in tubes to pots of cream and even convenient pen options—you’ll want to consider when and where you’re going to be using cuticle oil. Do you want to stash it in your bag? A rollerball may be ideal for you. Want to keep it in your bathroom with your other nail products? A traditional dropper formula can work itself nicely into your nailcare routine.
