These ’90s Muses Are My Fall Beauty Blueprint
I’ll be copying Sade’s braid all season long.

Key Takeaways
- ’90s It girls provide endless beauty inspiration—especially when it gets colder outside.
- From CBK’s signature blowout to Garcelle Beauvais’s moody lipstick collection, discover fall beauty inspiration from all the muses.
It’s trite to say you were born in the wrong generation, but sometimes this ’90s baby wishes she were a ’90s baddie. Besides the fact that I would’ve loved to spend my nights playing with the cord on a landline phone while gabbing (you just don’t get the same physical satisfaction from a slick iPhone case), I never feel cuter than when I’m wearing my mom’s old slip dresses and some brown lip liner.
Honestly, a new tube of Bobbi Brown’s discontinued Ruby Stain lipstick might alone be worth joining Gen X for. I’ll never know the pleasure of applying it, but I’ll try my hardest to get close. Word is that it was Carolyn Bessette Kennedy’s favorite.
As far as I know, the nearest we can get to physical time travel is recreating the looks we so adore looking back on. The ’90s It Girls are my beauty muses year round, but there’s something especially autumnal about so much of their glam. Is it because nostalgia hits harder in the fall, with back-to-school season and Thanksgiving plans bringing us back to our hometowns? I’m not sure! What I do know is that as the leaves fall, I want to look like I’m on Twin Peaks.
Ahead, I’m sharing a list of ’90s muses that provide endless fall beauty inspo, from gorgeous lip colors to messy hairdos and brows both heavy and thin.
Kate Moss

There’s no way you’re surprised to see Kate Moss here. The face, as she was/is known, was gorgeous then and is gorgeous now. But man oh man, the then. Because the model was always… modeling, her early off-duty looks often leaned fresh-faced, sweet, and simple. She was ready to glam at a moment’s notice—and glam she did—but her messy hair, touch of mascara, and dab of gloss moments are as striking as those nights of heavy kohl and clumpy lashes.
Here, Moss shows how to apply your fall blush in such a way that it looks like you’ve just been on a nice, crisp walk among the crunchy leaves. The tousled hair is amazing (you’ll see that that’s a theme here) and that pout shows no sign of the dry winter air sneaking in.

Sade

Sade radio is amazing getting ready music, and Sade is amazing getting ready inspiration. Alongside those strong brows, bold lips, and a casual ’90s mermaidcore moment, I most often find myself trying to copy her early career signature braid. You can picture it—slicked back in front, bold in back—with any fall outfit, from a slouchy jacket to the perfect sweater on view above.
There’s more to love, though. That red lip is so shiny and the winged eyeliner has the capacity to put you in a place of “the days are getting shorter, but my nights can still be long.” The whole look is dramatic but cozy, not to mention entirely classic.

Minnie Driver

In a fairly matte landscape, Minnie Driver brought plenty of dew to ’90s red carpets. I first met her as a literal fairy godmother in Ella Enchanted, but doesn’t she have something generally ethereal going on?
I sadly don’t have those curls, but still look to Driver as the blueprint for a good loose tendril moment. Her complexion is also the source of plenty of inspiration—you can’t tell me this September 1997 freckle and glazed skin situation isn’t giving 2020s Hailey Bieber, too. This fall, let Driver’s gorgeous face serve as a reminder to bump up the moisturizer and spend lots of time with your hyaluronic acid serum. A glossy lipstick will only add to the allure.

Mädchen Amick

It’s hard to pick a singular Twin Peaks girlas fall beautyinspiration. Their looks were all so moody, with eye makeup perfectly fit for staring languidly at the clock during homeroom. This time, Mädchen Amick wins as source photo… but please know I love them all equally.
Anyway, have you ever seen a more autumnal look? It all works so well together: the gingery matte-brown lipstick, the shimmery top, the wavy brunette hair with a touch of auburn in it (which somehow matches the lipstick perfectly). I’m also obsessed with the soft smudge of her eyeshadow and bit of gleam right underneath the lower lash line. Is it a tear? Some white liner? I want it, no matter what’s going on.

Carolyn Bessette Kennedy

There are so many things that enchant me about CBK, and her hair is very high on that list. Though those lemon platinum locks looked gorgeous when slicked back into a low bun or topped off with a thick headband, my favorite moments were when she let her mane go wild.
For fall, I’m leaning into her undone signature blowout. It features lots of gloss, a bit of natural wave, and a middle part that looks like it naturally fell that way. (I’m sure it did.) Also of note: the glowy cheekbones that I’ll be replicating with highlighter and that perfect red lip. In Carole Radziwill’s book What Remains, she mentioned her bestie was big into Bobbi Brown’s Ruby Stain lipstick. As mentioned, it doesn’t exist anymore (they have a Ruby, which is close at least?), so I’ll spend this fall tracking down a dupe of the brick shade above.

Garcelle Beauvais

Say it with me (in a Lisa Rinna voice): “Garcellleeee!” Before she was Bravo royalty, Garcelle Beauvais was a ’90s It Girl with a gorgeous array of dark lipsticks at her disposal. This deep plum shade is especially dreamy and yes, I will also be matching my lip color with my outfit all season long.
We can’t easily replicate those stunning cheekbones, but a pretty, subtle flush of blush is simple to get the hang of. Those thin brows are enough to cause a standoff between me and my tweezer, and the long lashes and bouncy blowout couldn’t be better.

Sadie Frost

You can see where Iris Law gets it, right? Like her daughter today, Miss Sadie Frost always kept things interesting with her ’90s beauty looks. She’d step out with Twiggy-inspired heavy bottom lashes (and 30 years later direct a movie about the icon, 2024’s Twiggy) or, as seen above, apply more than a simple pop of color to her lips and cheeks. Her short hair was always slightly messy, with a bang sticking up or a haphazard application of butterfly clips. And it looked amazing.
Fall can be so bland, so it’s always nice to look to Frost for a reminder to add some color back in. Also: here’s a lesson in “blush blindness.” The key takeaway: It’s not a thing.
